Energy Audit at Ed Smith
Students and staff participating in the Urban Teacher Calendar program at Ed Smith have been working with SUNY ESF staff on an energy audit of the school. The students conducted the audit by examining all the classrooms in the building which were not occupied during the summer program. ESF provided teachers with the tools for students to explore alternative sources of energy.
The students calculated the actual, as well as, "vampire" loads, in watts, of all the electrical appliances in each room. They then calculated the total Kilowatt hour of energy being used for each day of the summer vacation, as well as the cost at the rate of .17 cent per Kwh. In addition to studying the usage students will be putting together a presentation of the statistics they found and making recommendations for future steps to help with energy conservation.
