On behalf of the Syracuse City School District, we would like to invite SCSD 5th Grade Families to “ELMS Information Night” on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 6 pm - 7 pm at ELMS, which is located at 4942 South Salina Street, Syracuse, NY 13205.
At the Syracuse Expeditionary Learning Middle School (ELMS), students benefit from a personalized, yet academically rigorous atmosphere.  Curriculum is organized into interdisciplinary “expeditions” and teachers often use the greater Syracuse community as their classroom.  ELMS teachers work daily with small groups of students, called Crews, to help students build strong relationships with each other and to actively engage in the school experience.
Over the past eight years, ELMS staff, students and families have worked collaboratively to create a welcoming school community and learning environment that promotes lifelong learning through an expeditionary process of inquiry, collaboration, discovery and adventure.  As a result, ELMS students develop the academic knowledge and social skills to work effectively within diverse academic and social settings.  They are equipped to positively impact their school and local communities as upstanders rather than bystanders, while maintaining the desire and ability to succeed in high school, college, and their professional careers and in the community.
Students who will be entering 6th grade in September 2016, and who are interested in ELMS must submit an online application during the ELMS enrollment period of March 1, 2016 – March 31, 2016.  This application can be obtained by visiting www.enrollinsyracusecityschools.com during that timeframe.  Late applications will not be accepted.
Potential students will be identified, contacted and interviewed by the ELMS Enrollment Committee.  Students will be selected based on a variety of academic and socio-emotional factors that include, but are not limited to:
  • Demonstrated interest in project-based learning and an ability to work in small groups with peers
  • Possession of strong interpersonal/leadership skills
  • Established challenges or concerns that put the student at-risk for low academic performance or social isolation
If you are interested in learning more about ELMS, please join us by attending “ELMS Information Night” on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 6 pm - 7 pm. This event will afford you the opportunity to gather information and ask questions about the Expeditionary Learning Middle School.  We hope to see you then.
