Phase 1 of the Joint School Construction Board (JSCB) project is well underway in the Syracuse City School District. There are currently construction projects taking place at Fowler High School, Institute of Technology at Central and Dr. Weeks Elementary with work at HW Smith to begin in April 2012. Below is some general information about each of the three projects:

George W. Fowler High School

  • $50 Million Project
  • Scope of Construction: Library/office/classroom addition, new building entrance/bus loop drop off, new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, additional and new windows, extensive interior renovations (new room configurations, walls, finishes, laboratories, casework) and LEED Silver.
  • Construction Contracts awarded to: Fahs - General Construction; Siracusa - Mechanical; Weydman - Electrical; M.A Ferraullo - Plumbing; Ridley - Technology.
  • Construction to be performed in three phases while building is occupied
  • June 7, 2011 - Ground Breaking Ceremony
  • Phase 1 construction started in June 2011.
  • Work completed: foundations and steel erection for new library, guidance and main office addition on south side of building, utility relocations, phase 1 interior demolition
  • Work ongoing: site work, phase 1 interior renovations, masonry work in addition
  • Projected Construction Completion Date: February 2013
  • Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central

  • $31 Million Project
  • Scope of Construction: gymnasium/classroom addition, new bus loop/drop off, new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, new windows, new roof and renovated elevator, extensive interior renovations (new specialty rooms, room configurations, walls, finishes, laboratories, casework) and LEED Silver.
  • Construction Contracts awarded to: Christa - General Construction; Joy Mechanical - Mechanical; Patricia - Electrical; Joy Mechanical - Plumbing; Huen - Technology.
  • June 27, 2011 - Ground Breaking Ceremony
  • Construction started in June 2011 (asbestos removal and demolition work completed in previous contract).
  • Work completed: temporary electrical service for building, asbestos removal and selected demolition, foundation and steel erection for classroom addition, utility relocations.
  • Work ongoing: site work, interior renovations, foundations for gymnasium/office addition
  • Projected Construction Completion Date: November 2012 (students and staff will re-occupy building in September 2012)
  • Dr. Weeks Elementary

  • $29 Million Project
  • Scope of Construction: new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, additional and new windows, new roof, extensive interior renovations (new room configurations, walls, finishes, casework) and LEED Silver.
  • Construction Contracts awarded to: Fahs - General Construction; J and A Mechanical - Mechanical; Knapp Electric - Electrical; Thurston Dudek - Plumbing; Huen - Technology.
  • Construction started in June
  • Projected Construction Completion Date: March 2012
  • H.W. Smith K-8

  • $28 Million Project (estimate)
  • Scope of Construction: site work, six classroom additions, new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, new windows, new roof, extensive interior renovations (new finishes, casework, some room reconfigurations) and LEED Silver.
  • Project being bid and awarded in February and March 2012
  • Projected Construction Start Date: April 2012 (addition) followed by main building in July 2012
  • Projected Construction Completion Date: September 2013
