Superintendent's Message to Staff - October 21

I was pleased to visit Frazer this week, along with the Syracuse Fire Department, Sen. Valesky and others, to celebrate the kickoff of the Junior Fire Marshal program, sponsored by The Hartford Financial Services Group. This important program will provide all SCSD students in kindergarten through third grade with a special Junior Fire Marshal kit to help them learn about fire safety. Given the recent fire-related tragedies that have impacted families in our District, we are appreciative of The Hartford’s generosity through this program.

As you may know, upperclassmen across the SCSD took part in PSAT/SAT Day this week. It is a great opportunity to ensure that our high schoolers are #SCSDCollegeReady and I am proud of all who took part. I wanted to highlight a wonderful activity that Corcoran staff prepared for their freshman class on PSAT/SAT Day. The Corcoran Cougar Success Academy was intended to help freshmen find a focus as they come to school each day, to encourage a discussion around how to be successful in school and to engage students in discovering what life after high school and college might entail. Students especially enjoyed a speaker from “Hard as Nails,” and it was great to see these students gain a renewed motivation to Go for the Gold this year!

We ended the week with our SCSD College Fair.  Juniors and seniors from each our high schools along with a select group of middle school students were able to attend.  There were over 60 colleges and universities in attendance!

This week’s #SCSDLookBack video features International Day at Dr. Weeks, a Vice Principal Academy, this year’s first session of the Syracuse Aspiring Leaders Academy, Seymour students learning about dental health, P-Tech students visiting Ephesus Lighting, blended learning at Lincoln, restorative circles throughout the District, Take Your Parent to School Night at Huntington and more. Make sure you share your good news photos with us on Twitter (@SyracuseSchools) to be featured in next week’s SCSD Look Back!

Have a great weekend.
