Superintendent's Message to Staff - March 3
Published on 3/6/17
What a week we’ve had! From our couple days of warmth to winter’s return, I hope you are all staying positive and thinking spring!
Now that March is here, we are in the midst of budget season. On Monday afternoon, the Board of Education hosted the first public budget hearing, and I spent mid-week in Albany meeting with our elected officials to advocate on behalf of SCSD students and families. If you’d like to familiarize yourself with the budget process – or if you’d like to provide comments – please visit our 2017-18 Budget page.
One of our favorite annual celebrations took place this week: Read Across America Day! Many of our schools took part in special celebrations to encourage reading, and Delaware even kicked off a ‘One Million Hops into Literacy’ event. Delaware students have pledged to read one million words before March 24th! On Thursday, I visited Bellevue to read to students, and I know many of our buildings were full of special guest readers. Thank you to all of you who took the time to make Read Across America Day a special day for your students – and thank you to all who took the time to volunteer as guest readers!
If you are looking for an opportunity to show your SCSD spirit this weekend, please consider cheering on the Henninger boys basketball team on Sunday at 6:30 pm as they face off against Liverpool in the Section III championship at OCC’s SRC Arena. The Black Knights last won the Class AA sectional championship in 2015 and they could use your support as they attempt to move on to the state regional playoffs!
Finally, I encourage you to take a couple of minutes to view this week’s #SCSDLookBack video. This week, you’ll see more Read Across America celebrations, Franklin students exploring the ZSpace bus, the Corcoran Cougars hockey team, a living wax museum at Delaware, High School information night/ENL night at Lincoln, Building Men ‘Chalk Talks’ at WSA, Fowler students blending photography & poetry, Henninger Hoops on CNY Central and more. Be sure to share your good news photos with us on Twitter (tag us: @SyracuseSchools) to be featured next week!
