Special Education K - 12

Resources & Supports

This interactive resource serves to support SCSD Special Education K-12 staff in the implementation of the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum in grades K-2 and the SCSD English Language Arts curriculum (aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards) in grades 3-12.

Please scroll to your grade level and click on the link(s) that aligns to the units, strands, or domains of the CKLA curriculum or SCSD ELA Units.

Background: In 2012-13, a team was created, the Special Education Curriculum Support Team (SPECS Team) to respond to the new ELA Curriculum Unit Assessments by providing teachers with adapted assessments at various reading levels.  The goal was - and continues to be - to ensure that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning. ? ? In addition, Special Education and Consultant Teacher Resource Guide were created for most ELA Curriculum Units.  While the recommendations are research-based methods and practices that have a proven record of helping students with disabilities, “there is no recipe for adapting general education curriculum to meet each student’s needs. Each teacher, each student, each classroom is unique and adaptations are specific to each situation.”  With that said, in addition to student data and IEP goals, we encourage you to use these resources as you work to meet the unique needs of your students and ensure their access, involvement, and progress in the general education curriculum.

Adapted Assessments(AA):

In addition to the Unit Resource Guides, the SPECS Team will continue to provide Adapted Assessments (AA) for every grade and ELA Unit that has a writer for that grade level.  A critical part of teaching and assessing students with disabilities is providing them with accommodations that support learning and their ability to demonstrate knowledge, skill and understanding. Therefore, these assessments are being provided with accommodations to enable the students to demonstrate what they know and can do without lowering the learning expectations, the performance expectations or changing the target skill being taught or measured.

Levels: Texts are identified by levels, high to low, where Level A is the highest and so on.  When appropriate, teachers are encouraged to try a one/two minute attempt using the Original Unit assessment to determine if students are able to work with the Original assessment successfully. If this is the case, the assessment should be completed and documented that the Original assessment was administered. If not, proceed with the steps for choosing the Level that will best match the student's unique needs.  On the next unit assessment, apply this same scenario of trying the next Level up from the previous assessment administered. (I.e. if you used Level B on Unit 1, try Level A on Unit 2 instead of going directly to Level B.)

Always consider each student's unique needs.  Consult IEP/504 Plans, accommodations currently and routinely used during classroom instruction, and data from recent reading assessments when choosing the appropriate adapted assessment Level to administer to the student.

Rubrics: The original rubrics created and embedded in the ELA Reading Units should be used for scoring as all original texts were modified and used for the adapted assessments.

Accommodations: An accommodation is the practice of making an assignment or assessment more accessible to the student with a disability through changes in formatting, timing, setting, scheduling, and/or presentation.  An accommodation does not change the standard of measurement for the task, only the accessibility of the task. Accommodations can help students overcome or minimize the barriers presented by their disabilities.

Resources & Supports

This interactive resource serves to support SCSD Special Education K-12 staff in the implementation of the SCSD English Language Arts curriculum (aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards).  In 2012-13, a new team was created, the Special Education Curriculum Support Team (SPECS Team) to respond to the new ELA Curriculum Unit Assessments by providing teachers with alternate assessments at various reading levels.  The goal was to ensure that all students were given the opportunity to demonstrate what they had learned.

In addition, you will find a Special Education and Consultant Teacher Resource Guide for most ELA Curriculum Units.  While the recommendations are research-based methods and practices that have a proven record of helping students with disabilities, “there is no recipe for adapting general education curriculum to meet each student’s needs. Each teacher, each student, each classroom is unique and adaptations are specific to each situation.”  With that said, in addition to student data and IEP goals, we encourage you to use these resources as you work to meet the unique needs of your students and ensure their access, involvement, and progress in the general education curriculum. .

Adapted Assessments(AA):
