Cheerleader Recognized for Academic Achievement

Lincoln Middle School student Lydia Richard has been chosen as a 2011-2012 Pop Warner All-American Scholar.

Lydia, a 7th grader, was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement. She ranks among the top two percent of the approximately 400,000 children nationwide who participate in the Pop Warner Little Scholars’ spirit and football programs.

She is a cheerleader for the Eastwood Bears.

Chiefs Players Pitch BASE Program

Students in elementary schools in the Syracuse City School district had the opportunity to spend some time learning about healthy eating, the importance of exercise and being a good teammate when members of the Syracuse Chiefs and representatives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum came to visit classrooms.

Learn About National Board Certification

Teachers interested in learning more about National Board Certification are encouraged to attend one of three informational sessions being offered at the Syracuse Teacher Center.

The sessions are being held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 29th, June 6th and June 12th at the center, 1153 W. Fayette St., Suite 200.
Attendees will receive information on what National Board Certification is, how to start working toward gaining it and what the requirements are to complete the program.

Students Honored for Outstanding Artwork

Winners of the School Bus Safety Poster Contest were honored at the District’s Transportation Center recently.

Jaime Alicea, deputy superintendent of the Syracuse City School District, handed out awards to several students whose drawings were on display at the Center. Participation in the contest also put the students’ schools in the running for a pizza party or a free field trip. The contest, sponsored by First Student, has been around for nine years.

Pat Bailey, the district’s director of transportation, said there were 208 entries this year.

SCSD Teacher Wins National Award

Gwendolyn Maturo-Grasso, an English Language Arts teacher at Lincoln Middle School, has been chosen as the 2012 National Teacher of the Year by the South Eastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering (SECME).

Celebration of Excellence Honors 18

Parents of Public Schools of Syracuse is recognizing local teachers, volunteers, students and administrators at their annual Celebration of Excellence. Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras will be the guest speaker at the event, which is being held at Syracuse Stage on May 30th.

Dads Attend Breakfast at Huntington

Sixty students at Huntington School enjoyed breakfast with their dads as part of a “Bring Your Dad to School’’ event.

The leadership team and support staff at Huntington have been working since the 2010-2011 academic year to increase parent involvement at the school. They have specifically targeted projects that would bring more fathers in to the building.

SCSD Baseball Players Part of Charity Tournament

The Syracuse East and Syracuse West baseball teams joined players from 10 other teams at the 2012 Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease Baseball Classic at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Congratulations to Taniya Williams an 8th grader at Roberts School. Taniya competed at the Level 8 States Championships and won the Floor Exercise Competition!
