Syracuse City School District Board of Education to Hold Public Budget Hearings

The Syracuse City School District Board of Education will hold two public budget hearings. The hearings will take place on Tuesday, April, 10th and Wednesday, April 11th from 5:30-7:00 PM in the District Board Room, 725 Harrison Street, Syracuse, New York.

The public is urged to attend.

New York State Education Department Releases 2010-11 Report Cards

The New York State Education Department has released the 2010-11 individual school and district report cards. The report cards provide enrollment, demographic, attendance, suspension, dropout, teacher, assessment, accountability, graduation rate, post-graduate plan, career and technical education, and fiscal data for schools, districts, and the State.

Say Yes Opens Financial Aid Center

Say Yes to Education announces the opening of the Say Yes Financial Aid Counseling Center (FACC). The FACC will be housed in the Say Yes (109 Otisco Street) and will be open beginning Saturday, April 7th and continuing every Saturday through September 8th (with the exception of 5/26, 7/7 and 9/1) from 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM.

Bellevue Elementary Students Award Winning Poetry

Two third grade students from Bellevue Elementary School won awards for their poetry from the Central New York Branch of the National League of American Pen women 2012 Poetry Contest. The students wrote poems about an insect that they studied during the Say Yes afterschool program. Kai’Asia Reed won 2nd place for her poem, entitled “WETA.” Nyaisha Vazquez received an Honorable mention for her poem, “Firefly.”

Seymour Students Say Yes to Tennis

Students at Seymour Dual Language Academy elementary school are learning all about tennis this spring thanks to a grant from the United States Tennis Association, Say Yes to Education and Syracuse University.

Tennis players from the greater Syracuse community have been working to improve the health of children at Seymour and their families. About 35 students are participating in the program, which is being offered through Say Yes to Education’s Extended Day program. The students will be able to continue receiving the benefits of the program through Seymour’s Say Yes Summer Camp.

Webster Teacher Writes Travel Book

Jeffrey Merola, a 4th grade teacher at Webster Elementary School has written a book. “The Busy Family’s Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, 2012, was published by Amazon. It is available in paperback or on Kindle.

HW Smith Students Present “I Want My Mummy”

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at HW Smith have been preparing for almost 2 months to present “I Want My Mummy” to audiences. The students memorized over 24 pages of dialogue and music in preparation for the show.

During rehearsals students not only worked on the dialogue and music but they learned improvisatory skills, comedic timing, vocal projection, basic theater skills, concepts, and vocabulary.

The JT Robert's Family Comes Together

The PTO at Roberts School is hoping to help the family of Joshua Meeker with the proceeds from a bake sale at the school on April 4th.
Joshua is an 8th grade student at Roberts who is suffering from Burkitt’s leukemia. He has been unable to attend school this year because he is undergoing treatment for the disease at Upstate University Hospital.

Blodgett Students Get New Gadgets Thanks to Ambassador Program

Students at Blodgett Middle School will be using a new iPad, digital camera, graphing calculators and electronic bugs in their classrooms thanks to an ambassador program with Syracuse University and local company SRC.

The students received the equipment during classroom presentation in February. SU students and staff, teachers from the Syracuse City School district and community leaders were able to see, first hand, the benefits of the LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors Program.
