Members of the Corcoran High School hockey team spent a recent Saturday sprucing up the grounds of their school.  Many of the students who participated in the cleanup do not attend school at Corcoran but are part of the district-wide hockey team. The students removed several bags of leaves and trash as part of their cleanup efforts.

In addition, Mike Smolnycki donated his landscaping talents and the campus should be dotted with several hundred daffodil blooms next spring at the entrances to the school.

Parent volunteers, teachers, students, siblings and neighbors helped transform the blacktop in the playground at Ed Smith K-8 School into a work of art and an educational opportunity. They all worked together to create a world map, United States map, hopscotch lines, four square lines, picture frames, basketball free throw lines, coyote paw prints and a compass on the blacktop.

The fall cheerleading squad at ITC took home the sectional title this year after winning in competition Nov. 10 at South Jefferson High School. Rick Spicer, Supervisor of Athletics at ITC, praised the students and their coach.  “The hard work and dedication to their sport has been evident over the last few years that I have been able to observe the athletes as well as their coach.’’

Students from throughout the Syracuse City School District traveled to Parsippany, N.J. to compete during the 2012 NSBE regional conference. Syracuse students took part in three events (mathematics, robotics and science fair) and each event had two divisions, one for high school and one for middle school.

The Social Studies and English Language Arts departments collaborated with the local chapter of the Dunbar American Legion Association (one of the first African-American chapters in the nation) to sponsor a district oratorical contest for our high school students.  The contest was at Nottingham High School and the students were competing for a chance to move on and try to win up to $18,000 in scholarships.

Students in the class of 2013 at Fowler High School attended a Career Day in early November that featured a discussion on dressing for success, a presentation on making college and career count and an opportunity to speak with a variety of people from the community about their chosen career.
