Westside Academy Students Create Community Garden

Mr. Schober's 7th Grade Technology class from Westside Academy at Blodgett began work on their raised beds in the new community garden. This is a collaborative effort with Dr. Marion Wilson and her Syracuse University summer art class.

Students from Westside Academy and Syracuse University are working together to create a community garden at 601 Tully Street. Creating the garden involves hands on learning that incorporates science, math, architectural design and art. Students learn to take pride in their community and gain respect for the hard work and creativity it takes to make a garden.

They have already planted many different kinds of flowers, and tomatoes are growing in the raised garden. When they visited a neighborhood second-hand store they found their first two planters, a bathtub and toilet. The students are hoping community members will stroll through the garden and appreciate and enjoy it.
