Henninger Students Star in “The Curious Savage’’

Students at Henninger High School will present “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick at 7 p.m. November 2 and 3.

The comedy, performed through an agreement with Dramatists Play Services, centers around Mrs. Savage, who has been left $10 million by her husband. Mrs. Savage wants to make the best use of the money, even though her stepchildren are eager to get their hands on it.

Knowing that her wealth is now in negotiable securities the only way the stepchildren see to secure the riches is through committing Mrs. Savage to a "sanatorium" hoping to "bring her to her senses." But Mrs. Savage has other ideas.

In the sanatorium she meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money.

All SCSD Afterschool Activities Cancelled Including Say Yes to Education Afterschool Program

The Syracuse City School District has cancelled all after school activities for Monday, October 29, 2012.  This includes Say Yes to Education after school programming, Parent University classes and athletics.  Students will be dismissed at their regular dismissal time.

From struggling Fowler student to successful businessman and educator

Google the name Dr. Emad Rahim and a list of his academic and employment achievements appear.  You can easily see that Rahim is a successful educator and leader in the business world and he is the Dean of College and Business Management at Colorado Technical University.

But Google only tells part of Rahim’s story. In order to fully know and understand Rahim, you need to know his background.  A survivor of the Killing Fields in Cambodia and a troubled, learning disabled teen in the 1980s, Rahim has had his share of adversity and hardship. That past, however, did not prevent him from achieving a great deal of success.

Rahim and his family came to Syracuse around 1985 and he enrolled at Frazer K-8 School.  There he found great teachers and a diverse student body that acted as a support system for him.  Rahim was in both English as a Second Language (ESL) and special education classes for several years.  He finished at Frazer and moved on to Grant Middle School.

Green SCSD Team to Celebrate Daylight Day

On September 26, 2012 students and teachers all across the Syracuse City School District will be opening their blinds and letting the sunshine in to celebrate Daylight Day.  Please join the Green SCSD team in their efforts to boost student achievement and reduce their carbon footprint.  Teachers and staff are pledging to turn off the lights on Daylight Day.

Contract for Excellence Public Hearing

The Syracuse City School District will be holding its annual Public Hearing on the 2012 Contract for Excellence on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 5:00 PM.  The hearing will be held in the Board of Education Board Room at 725 Harrison Street.  The 2012-13 Contract for Excellence narratives, school standings and budget information can be found here.

Lunch and Breakfast Free for SCSD Students

The Syracuse City School District, as part of a pilot program, will offer free lunch and breakfast to all students in the district for the 2012-2013 school year. The United States Department of Agriculture Community Eligibility Option allows the district to offer both meals at no charge to all students in all schools. Students must still pay for a la carte items (extras that are not part of the regular breakfast or lunch).

Opening of School September 4

The Syracuse City School District begins the 2012-13 school year on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. All students, with the exception of Fowler HS students, are to report to school on Tuesday the 4th. The start and end times for all schools are listed here.

At Fowler, only the 9th grade students are to report on the 4th at 7:50 AM for a special orientation of the newly remodeled high school.  Fowler 10th grade students will attend on Wednesday, September 5th in the morning only from 7:50 AM to 10:50 AM.  Fowler 11th grade students will attend in the afternoon from 11:20 AM to 2:20 PM. Please note that eleventh graders needing to ride a Centro bus to get to school on September 5th will need to ride one of the regular line busses, which will drop the students off one block from the school.

All Fowler students will report on Thursday, September 6 at 7:50 AM with a special orientation of the building for seniors taking place that morning.

Important Transportation Message

This is an important message from the Syracuse City School District for parents of students in kindergarten through grade eight. It has been brought to our attention that some families may not have not received their child's bus information. If you have not received this information you may call the transportation office at 435-4260, Monday, September 3rd from 8 am to 6 pm and Tuesday, Sept. 4 beginning at 5 am. Again, if you have not received your child's bus information you may call 435-4260, Monday, September 3rd from 8 am until 6 pm and Tuesday, Sept. 4 beginning at 5 am.

The SCSD believes that one of the most important ways we can help our children perform better in the classroom is to provide them with the nutrition necessary for the healthy growth of minds and bodies. More than 10,000 breakfasts and 14,000 lunches are provided to students daily.

New York State Education Department Awards Syracuse City School District Systemic Supports for District and School Turnaround Grant

The New York State Education Department announced today that the Syracuse City School District has been awarded the Systemic Supports for District & School Turnaround Grant. The grant is for two years and totals over $2 million dollars.
