“Write to make a blind man see and a deaf man hear.” These words from Bud Poliquin, columnist for the Post-Standard, inspired the 26 rising ninth grade students who attended the 3rd annual Writing Institute at Nottingham High School. Over the three- week program students kept a Writer’s Notebook, wrote and revised a personal narrative and created a digital movie to explore how writing affects the world.
The Summer Success Academy (SSA) was a five-week program at Onondaga Community College (OCC) created to prepare students to be more successful in college. The program took place from July 6 - August 10, 2012 and included 29 Syracuse City School District graduates who all intend to enroll at OCC in Fall 2012 as full-time Say Yes Scholars. Orientation was on July 6, 2012, followed by a team-building day at Orenda Springs on July 7th and classes/programming Monday-Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM July 9-August 10, 2012.
The Environmental Enterprise Class at Huntington's summer enrichment program visited Clear Channel radio on a mission to promote the importance of recycling. The class toured Clear Channel and worked side by side with the production engineers and on air talent to record a Public Service Announcement. The PSA promotes a strategy, that if used correctly, will help reduce pollution called Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
The Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY) presented Gwen Raeford, Fowler High School science teacher with their 2012 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at the recent Board of Education Business Meeting. The award was created in 1988 to recognize the vital role that teachers play in the preparation of future technologists.
Dr. Arthur Vercillo, Regional President of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and Sharon L. Contreras, Syracuse City School District Superintendent announced the generous donation of a $90,000 multiyear grant by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield that will help HW-SC launch a
program called Healthy Mind/Healthy Body. The initiative will teach healthy habits to Syracuse students, leading to their overall well-being and success in and out of the classroom.
Gabriel Bol Deng, a former “Lost Boy’’ of Sudan, shared his story of survival with students at LeMoyne Elementary school in December. They listened as Deng told them about resilience and the benefits of having a positive attitude. He also talked to the students about a typical day for a boy or girl in his village and told them how important education is to these children. Deng said Sudanese children will often walk for two hours to attend school. The LeMoyne students heard that Deng built a school in his community because he wanted to give something back.
They listened as Deng talked about the struggles children in homeland face and they decided to take action. The children decided they wanted to help build a fence around Ariang School and the fundraising began.
The Syracuse City School District Board of Education announced the restructuring of the Board of Education committee structure. The new structure will now consist of two work sessions, Education and Operations and an Audit Committee.
This letter is to inform you about the upcoming New York State Education Department Assessments. These assessments are required by NYSED and are used to evaluate school district performance as well as individual student performance. These assessments measure how well students have mastered the content and skills identified in the NYSED standards. Please save and reference these dates to ensure your child is well prepared to do their best on these assessments.
I am writing to inform you that the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has reinstated our School Improvement Grant (SIG) funding. The reinstatement of this funding would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of our partners at the Syracuse Teachers Association (STA) and Syracuse Administrators and Supervisors (SAAS). By working collaboratively we were able to come to an agreement that facilitates the improvement of instructional practices, supports teacher development and promotes learner centered schools.
ITC student athletes Tial Thang and Mikell Clemons have both recently been honored as the Post Standard Honor Athlete of the Week. Tial is a junior at ITC who was recognized for his accomplishments on the wrestling mat. Mikell is the leading scorer on the boy’s basketball team which is off to a wonderful start to the 2011-12 season. Congratulations to both student athletes!
