On September 26, 2012 students and teachers all across the Syracuse City School District will be opening their blinds and letting the sunshine in to celebrate Daylight Day.  Please join the Green SCSD team in their efforts to boost student achievement and reduce their carbon footprint.  Teachers and staff are pledging to turn off the lights on Daylight Day.

Members of the Superintendent’s Cabinet were proud to show off the marketing campaign they created with help from the Creative Services Department at Clear Channel Syracuse.

In a presentation to Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras, the students talked about what a valuable experience working on the campaign was for them and why they think it’s important to change the community’s perception of students who attend Syracuse City schools.

Noela Niyonkuru, a student in the Adult and Continuing Education Program with the Syracuse City School District and Edward Butler, one of the program’s teachers, have each been recognized by the New York Association for Continuing Community Education.

Niyonkuru is one of the Student of the Year award winners and Butler has been chosen as a Teacher of the Year.

Nearly 500 students, parents, health care practitioners, educators, and advocates gathered at the State Capital Building in Albany to raise awareness of the impact School Based Health Centers (SBHC’s) have on communities across New York State. Five students from the Syracuse City School District’s Westside Academy at Blodgett participated in the “Student Speakout” and listened to speeches from legislators and others who have been instrumental in bringing comprehensive health services to students on-site at schools.

Approximately 35 students from the Syracuse City School District competed in various career oriented competitions at the Section 2 Regional Skills USA Competition in Delhi, NY. There were 20 different areas students could compete in including cosmetology, television production, culinary, photography and much more.
