School Closing Information

SCSD Winter Weather Information

A snow-covered path winds through a forest of snow-laden trees.

In the event of inclement weather and SCSD schools are closed, the Syracuse City School District will communicate with families via announcements shared on local television stations, ParentSquare notifications (emails, app alerts, texts and phone calls), and posted on the SCSD website and Facebook page. Announcements are generally made before 6:00 am.

It is important that your contact information is up to date in our SchoolTool system so that you can receive notices from ParentSquare in the event school is closed, delayed or dismissed early. Please contact your school building if your contact information has changed.

When school is closed, after school and evening activities are automatically cancelled.

In instances where school is in session but after school activities must be cancelled, the Syracuse City School District will communicate with families midday via announcements shared on local television stations, sent out via ParentSquare, and posted on the SCSD website and Facebook page.

After school activity cancellations include adult education classes, homebound instruction, rehearsals, athletics, and all other after school and evening meetings and/or programming.

As we approach the winter months and prepare for winter weather, we are piloting a new two-hour delay plan. Our goal is to keep everyone safe while continuing learning whenever possible. Please see below for specific directions on your students’ expectations in the event of a two-hour delay.

  • For Pre-K-8 Students: You will follow the two-hour delay schedule by coming to school in person, just starting two hours later than usual. We have posted a two-hour delay schedule below with each school’s arrival and end time. Your bus schedule will run two hours later than normal time.

Students who attend Elmcrest and McCarthy at Beard will also operate on this two-hour delay schedule, with ALL students at Elmcrest and McCarthy at Beard (including high school students) reporting to school two hours delayed.

  • For High School Students: If there is a two-hour delay, high school students will follow the two-hour delay schedule but classes will be held virtually from home. We have posted a two-hour delay schedule below. Please make sure your child has a working device and internet access to log in for their classes before December 1st. Attached is a student preparation guide to go over with your high school student. Please contact your school building if you are having trouble, need internet access or have any questions.
  • Before School Programs are cancelled in the event of a 2-hour delay.

Students who attend SU classes on campus, Elmcrest and McCarthy at Beard will not attend school virtually, instead, students in grades 9-12 will report in person two hours delayed, at the schedule listed below.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we test this new approach and adjust if needed. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe and learning, even on snowy mornings!
