Supporting Students with School Therapy Dogs

School therapy dogs support student well-being by creating calm, welcoming learning environments. Research shows that interacting with therapy dogs can reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus, and build confidence - especially for students facing academic or emotional challenges. In schools, therapy dogs are often used to encourage reading, support social-emotional learning, and help students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.

All dogs in the program are fully up to date on required vaccinations and health screenings to ensure a safe and healthy school environment. All dogs and handlers have earned the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Certification through the American Kennel Club and have completed a Syracuse City School District specialized training program, ensuring safe, structured, and developmentally appropriate interactions with students.

Therapy dog visits are carefully planned, supervised by trained adults, and aligned with district policies and protocols. Participation is structured, respectful of individual comfort levels, and designed to be a positive and supportive experience for all students.

Meet Our Pack

Sadie

Therapy Dog Sadie Hi, my name is Sadie! I was born on September 24th, 2024. My parents picked me up in Skaneateles when I was about three months old, and I’ve been the happiest dog ever since.
I’m a professional fetch player - I could play ball all day long. When I’m not chasing tennis balls, you can find me cuddling like it’s my full-time job. I believe personal space is overrated.
Fun facts about me:
  • I will do just about anything for peanut butter
  • I think every new person is my new best friend
  • I enjoy going on long walks and hikes
I am so excited to be working with you and I cannot wait to meet you!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a school therapy dog?
A school therapy dog is a carefully trained dog that works with a trained handler to provide emotional support, promote a positive school climate, and assist with student well-being. Therapy dogs may visit classrooms, counseling spaces, libraries, or common areas as part of structured, supervised activities.
How do therapy dogs support students at school?
Therapy dogs can help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage positive social interactions, and support focus and emotional regulation. In many schools, therapy dogs are used to support reading programs, social-emotional learning, and student wellness initiatives.
Are the therapy dogs safe to be around students?
Yes. Student safety is the district’s highest priority. All dogs in the program are fully up to date on required vaccinations and health screenings. Interactions are planned, supervised, and conducted in accordance with district policies.
What training do the dogs and handlers have?
All dogs and handlers in the program have earned the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Certification through the American Kennel Club and have completed a Syracuse City School District specialized training program.
Are therapy dogs the same as service dogs?
No. Therapy dogs provide emotional support to groups of students and staff but do not have the same legal status or public access rights as service dogs.
What if a student is afraid of dogs, has allergies, or is uncomfortable?
Participation is structured and respectful of individual comfort levels. Schools consider allergies, fears, and family preferences, and no student is required to interact with a therapy dog.
How often do therapy dogs visit schools?
Visit frequency varies by school and program needs. All visits are coordinated with school staff and administrators.
Who supervises therapy dog interactions?
Therapy dogs are always accompanied by their trained handler and supervised by appropriate school staff.
Can parents opt their child out of therapy dog interactions?
Yes. Families may communicate preferences or concerns directly with their school, and alternative arrangements will be provided.
Who can I contact for more information?
Families are encouraged to contact their school administrator or the district office for additional details about the therapy dog program.
