Henninger Valedictorian Feature – Imad Al Ameen

This is a photo of Henninger Valedictorian Imad. What are your plans after graduation (what college, what interest in terms of major)? I will be attending Syracuse University, where I will major in Biology. I will be participating in the BS/MD program at Upstate Medical University as well. I hope to become an orthopedic surgeon! I love research and engineering; and I’ve already shadowed more than six hours of surgeries and completed various internships and volunteer hours at Crouse and Upstate.

What activities have you been involved in outside of class/outside of school? Swimming, Track, Cross Country, Martial Arts, Theater, Piano, HOSA. I also like to code and have been developing an app for student athletes, which I hope to launch in the coming months.

What has been the best part of your high school career and why? The best part of my time in high school was the people I’ve met. I don’t think I would have survived without great friends and the mentors who guided me toward a path I knew I wanted to be on.

What was your proudest moment in high school? I’m the most proud seeing how far we have all come, as a class, since freshman year. We’ve all worked so hard, and seeing everyone get into colleges and move toward their future is amazing.

What are you most looking forward to about college? I’m most looking forward to participating in the BS/MD program – there are so many opportunities that come with it. I’ll have tutors to help me, and I’ll get to participate in a summer research program. I really want to make the most of it and learn the most that I can!

What’s the best thing you’ve learned over the course of your time in the SCSD? I’ve learned the importance of meeting new people. Networking is so key. It’s as important as learning as much as you can! The right people can help propel you forward and connect you with others who can help you get where you want to go.

What advice would you give to other students as they continue their studies here? Always give quality work. Put in 110%. Working hard makes your brain want to do more! Also: be true to yourself. If something doesn’t feel right in your heart, listen.

What is something major you hope to achieve in life? I hope to be able to create advances in research, specifically in prosthetics, and in medicines. There are ways we can make things better and I want to help find them.

Henninger Salutatorian Feature – Nylah Frempong

What are your plans after graduation (what college, what interest in terms of major)? I will be attending Syracuse University, where IThis is a photo of Henninger Salutatorian Nylah. plan to major in Communication Science and Disorders. I’ll also be part of the Renee Crown Honors Program. Ultimately, I hope to become a Speech Language Pathologist. I want to help build others’ confidence.

What activities have you been involved in outside of class/outside of school? Student Council Secretary, SCSD Student Board Member, Community Wide Dialogue, DECA, Superintendent’s Student Cabinet, Principal’s Student Advisory Council, Varsity Girls Tennis Captain, Varsity Rowing (SyraCrew), Varsity Cheerleading, Junior Volunteer at Crouse Hospital, and I work at Chick-Fil-A.

What has been the best part of your high school career and why? The best part of my high school experience has been finding teachers and mentors who I know are here to support me as I work toward the future. They have helped me find opportunities I never knew I’d have. I’ve also valued taking SUPA classes and challenging myself with things that I know will help me in the future!

What was your proudest moment in high school? The thing I’m most proud of is overcoming academic adversity my freshman year. I was really struggling and didn’t do my best. Coming into sophomore year, I dedicated myself to better study habits. I knew it would all pay off in the end, and it has!

What are you most looking forward to about college? I’m most looking forward to being part of the Renee Crown University Honors Program. I’m looking forward to challenging myself alongside like-minded people who are excited to learn. As part of the honors program, I’ll be doing research that will be funded during my senior year, and I’m thinking of trying to start clinics or centers in the City of Syracuse to help people who face language barriers. Ultimately, I’m looking forward to preparing myself for a future where I can help other people.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned over the course of your time in the SCSD? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone that works here is here to help make you better so you are prepared when you enter the real world. Also: become confident in using your voice. Advocate for yourself. Everyone in the SCSD wants to see you succeed!

What advice would you give to other students as they continue their studies here? Take advantage of SUPA classes! They’re free. It’s such a great opportunity! My friends in other districts pay hundreds of dollars each semester, but I’ve gotten my core classes done now and I’m graduating with more than 50 college credits… all for free!

What is something major you hope to achieve in life? I really want to help people feel more comfortable with their speech. If you’re not comfortable with your speech, you can’t speak your mind. I want to connect with and advocate for people who don’t have strong advocates. I want to help change peoples’ lives.
