PSLA at Fowler Valedictorian Feature – Jeanifa Uwera

This is a photo of PSLA at Fowler Valedictorian Jeanifa. What are your plans after graduation (what college, what interest in terms of major)? I will be attending Le Moyne College, where I plan to study Nursing through a program with Crouse Hospital. I ultimately hope to become a nurse because I want to help people.

What activities have you been involved in outside of class/outside of school? I work at Wegmans.

What has been the best part of your high school career and why? The best part of my high school experience has been hanging out with friends and getting to know new people. My Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, Law Enforcement, led me to a great group of friends.

What was your proudest moment in high school? My proudest moment was being named Valedictorian. It was a surprise to me and I’m proud of myself! I focused on my grades, but being named Valedictorian was something I didn’t expect.

What are you most looking forward to about college? I’m most looking forward to meeting new people from other places. Working at Wegmans, I get to talk to a lot of people, and I love hearing the stories of where people are from and what they’ve gone through.

What’s the best thing you’ve learned over the course of your time in the SCSD? There are lots of opportunities for growth here. I’ve especially enjoyed my CTE program. The teacher, Mr. Turo, really cares about his students, and that’s something that can be said for most of the teachers in the SCSD.

What advice would you give to other students as they continue their studies here? My advice for other students is to keep going. Don't give up. Schoolwork is hard, and it's easy to put off... but keep going! It will be worth it in the end.

What is something major you hope to achieve in life? I would like to graduate from college. My parents never went to school in general and my mom wants me to get an education. I want to make her proud!

PSLA at Fowler Salutatorian Feature – Leah Dowdell

What are your plans after graduation (what college, what interest in terms of major)? This is a photo of PSLA at Fowler Salutatorian Leah. I plan to attend UB to study Pharmaceutical Science. I hope to become a scientist working in a lab where I can make medicines. I’ve always been interested in the medical field… my mom is a RN, but I’m more interested in the science side of things. I have asthma and I’d love to develop something that people like me could use to help make their treatment easier.

What activities have you been involved in outside of class/outside of school? I play volleyball and work as a cashier at Wegmans. I also love to bake!

What has been the best part of your high school career and why? The best part of my high school career has been taking college classes. I’ve been surrounded by friends who work hard, and I feel challenged as we’re learning together. I also love my teachers!

What was your proudest moment in high school? I always felt proudest when my classmates would come to me for help with classwork and I was actually able to help them understand something.

What are you most looking forward to about college? I’m excited about the freedoms of college – joining new clubs, finding new hobbies, and making new friends!

What’s the best thing you’ve learned over the course of your time in the SCSD? If you surround yourself with the right people, everything will become easier!

What advice would you give to other students as they continue their studies here? My advice would be to go to class and make good friends.

What is something major you hope to achieve in life? It would be so fun to open my own bakery one day… when I’m tired of being a scientist. That would make me so proud!
