NYGEAR UP

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a national discretionary grant program that creates innovative programing to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. SCSD is one of ten recipients of the grant across New York State (five school districts and five community-based organizations were chosen) that were provided with six years of funding to service the 2022/2023 cohort of 7th graders through their twelfth-grade year. Our services will not only benefit the students through tutoring, mentoring, college tours, early career experiences, and financial literacy, but it will benefit their parents and guardians as well. This grant has the opportunity to provide career and academic courses/workshops to families to assist them in their own academic and career journeys.

Spotlight on Excellence:
NYGEAR UP Logo Design Contest Winner

May 2023, NYGEAR UP held a contest to find a new logo to represent the program for New York State. All ten sites from the following locations in New York (Binghampton, Bronx, Dunkirk, Freeport, Jamestown, Manhattan, Newburgh, Ossining, Queens, Rochester, Roosevelt, Schenectady, and Syracuse) were eligible for student submissions. The Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) asked the students to design a logo, with the only stipulation being that the design needed to incorporate the program name, "NYGEAR UP". There were over 60 submissions from Syracuse City School District. The State Director of NYGEAR UP had students and chaperones who attended The Power of Youth Summer Leadership Academy at Wells College vote on the submissions that made it to the final round. It was a unanimous decision that SCSD student Lulacha LoseLose, rising 8th grade scholar of Frazer Pre K-8! His design will be used as the new logo for all things NYGEAR UP for the state, he will receive the logo on a t-shirt, and a $100 cash prize!

College Day Trip: Cornell University

NYGEAR UP, SUNY, and Cornell University teamed up to bring 100 students from our GEAR UP schools {Ed Smith, HW Smith, Huntington, Frazer, Lincoln, Grant, & Roberts} to an early college experience day at Cornell University on June 14, 2023. There, they enjoyed a walking tour of campus including Beebe Lake & the Statler Hotel!, lunch in Toni Morrison Dinig Hall, tours of over 23 libraries (including the Harry Potter room!), sports spaces on campus, and a vist with raptors! Each of these activities provided a preview into what they can study and look forward to if they choose to make Cornell University one of their post secondary SUNY options!
