Be a part of the SCSD Legacy

The Syracuse City School District is currently searching for our next Superintendent of Schools!  To assist and guide the Board of Education through this process, Hazard, Young Attea & Associates (HYA) has been hired.  They are a consulting firm that specializes in assisting school boards in identifying and recruiting educational leaders.

There are four phases to the HYA search process: engagement, recruitment, selection, and transition.

The engagement phase consists of stakeholder (student, family, staff, Board of Education, and community member) interviews, online surveys, and focus groups. Information from these interactions will assist the Board in developing criteria that will allow HYA to match the priorities of our community with the qualities in the leaders they select.

This inclusive and research-based approach will be designed to ensure that all members of our community have a voice, and to ensure that the candidate ultimately selected as Superintendent will be the best candidate to serve the unique needs of our SCSD community.

We will share updates on the progress of the Superintendent search here on this website as they become available. We look forward to engaging with you as we move forward with the search process, and we appreciate the role you play in our SCSD community!

What do you want to see in our next Superintendent?

The SCSD is seeking student, staff, family, and community feedback to help HYA develop criteria to help them match our next Superintendent to our District’s unique needs and priorities.

As part of their process, HYA will also be holding focus group sessions with various stakeholder groups to develop a leadership profile. Zoom forums and in-person sessions will be offered.

In-person feedback sessions for community members to share their thoughts will be held on August 16 (1:00 pm-2:30 pm; 4:00 pm-5:30 pm; 7:00 pm-8:30 pm) and August 17 (9:00 am-10:30 am). Community members are invited to join virtually if they are unable to attend in person.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help!

About

The Syracuse City School District educates more than 21,000 students each day, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Our vision is to prepare and inspire all of our students to innovate locally and contribute globally and we are embracing the challenge of giving all of our students a vibrant education with new urgency.

Here in the SCSD, we are Building Our Future as our students strive for #SCSDSuccess! Our new strategic plan is constructed to facilitate a coherent approach to continuous academic improvement. Click here to read our new five-year strategic plan, which outlines our Mission, Vision and Priorities.

We transport more than 15,000 students to and from school on a daily basis, ensuring that our students have a safe and reliable way to get to school and school-related activities.

Thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision, an agreement with the New York State Department of Education Child Nutrition Administration, all students in Syracuse City schools receive free breakfast and lunch each day. On a daily basis, we serve more than 10,000 breakfasts and 16,000 lunches. Participation in the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program at select SCSD schools also helps ensure that our students are receiving fresh and nutritious meals!

Our students are diverse, and we are proud to celebrate our #SCSDDiversity. More than 70 languages are spoken in the Syracuse City School District, and our students come from more than 60 countries. Our Department of English as a New Language (ENL), World Languages and Bilingual Education offers ENL programs in 26 schools. World Language classes are offered in 18 schools and offerings include Arabic, French, Spanish and American Sign Language. Our district even offers two bilingual education programs, housed at Seymour Dual Language Academy and Delaware Primary School!

In the Syracuse City School District, we also recognize the value in encouraging students to pursue their passions beyond academics. We offer more than 100 athletic team options to students in grades 7-12, which approximately 4,000 students take part in annually. Our Athletics programs aim to stress discipline, enjoyment, competition, teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship

Our Fine Arts programming includes both the visual and performing arts. At a high school level, students are offered a variety of courses in 2D and 3D art, as well as opportunities to take college-level courses through Syracuse University. Students at all grade levels are encouraged to take part in the dramatic and musical arts, and the SCSD music department offers general, choral and instrumental opportunities to all students. Our general Fine Arts curriculum is also enhanced by partnerships with community agencies including the Everson Museum of Art, the Community Folk Art Center, Onondaga Community College, the Open Hand Theater, Redhouse Arts Center, Syracuse Stage and Syracuse University.

INNOVATIVE NEW SCHOOLS

The SCSD is home to two Expeditionary Learning schools, a STEAM Elementary School, specialized programs that provide added social-emotional and mental health supports, and more. We are also home to the first regional STEAM high school in New York State, which is currently in development.

INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS

The SCSD offers an integrated personalized learning approach to education at all levels. In addition, we feature more than two dozen Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and other college and career readiness opportunities for our students, including Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), International Baccalaureate, and more. We offer dual language programs, expeditionary learning programs, and more to meet the unique needs of our students.
