Superintendent's Message 12/14/18
Published on 12/17/18
The holiday season is a time for giving, and I wanted to take a moment to highlight just two of the many projects happening throughout the district that show how #SCSDGivesBack! At Dr. King, students in the Junior Cadet program, led by Mr. Twan Gyder, hosted a coat drive to benefit Dr. King families as well as the Salvation Army. At Van Duyn, pre-kindergarten students, led by Ms. Valerie Escoffery, collected new pajamas to donate to Huntington Family Centers through the Pajama Program. I am so proud of the efforts our students and staff are making to show the community that they care!
Our students are also enjoying the season as #SCSDCelebrates. Scholars from Roberts, Dr. King, McKinley-Brighton, Dr. Weeks, Salem Hyde, Bellevue, McCarthy at Beard and Westside Academy at Blodgett were lucky enough to attend the annual ‘Shop with a Firefighter’ event last weekend at Destiny USA; and our Seymour kindergarteners enjoyed the 28th annual Carrier Holiday Party this week, where they each met Santa and received a gift from their wish list.
Our wish list received a generous showing of support this week as C&S Companies donated $250,000 to support our Career and Technical Education programs. This donation will go a long way in helping to ensure that our students graduate from the SCSD being college and career ready! C&S Companies has partnered with the SCSD for many years in a variety of roles, and we appreciate their ongoing support.
While we are in the season of celebrating, please take a moment to think of an exceptional educator who has influenced you. The SCSD Educational Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Educator of the Year Awards. Candidates must be full time district employees – and four winners will be selected: an elementary teacher, district administrator, secondary teacher and support staff member. Please click here to learn more and submit your nomination!
Finally, this week’s #SCSDLookBack video features Van Duyn scholars ice skating in Clinton Square, Syracuse Latin scholars fundraising for the Salvation Army at Destiny USA, an ENL family engagement cookie party at Dr. King, Grant scholars taking part in a think-pair-square activity, a spelling bee at Lincoln, Family Literacy Night at McKinley-Brighton and more. Please take a moment to watch and be inspired by the smiles students are showing as they work and learn!
