Salem Hyde Students Spread Kindness at Thanksgiving: Salem Hyde third grade teacher Amy MacDonough has a theme for her class this year: kindness is the new cool.   “I wanted to show them that it doesn’t cost anything to help people in our community,” Ms. MacDonough explained. “So we thought: what can we do?”   Students decided to paint rocks with messages of thanks and give them to school custodians and other staff that may sometimes go overlooked. SCSD Students Become Avid Readers Thanks to Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge: As part of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge, SCSD students were tasked with reading as much as they could this summer. Salem Hyde Students Create Interdisciplinary Ceramic Tile Mural: For the third year running, Salem Hyde fifth graders have the opportunity to become a lasting part of their school by creating a tile mural, thanks to a grant funded by the SCSD Educational Foundation.   “The tile relief process is the same each year, but the theme is different,” Art teacher Joe Foster explained. “They really look forward to it. Literacy Corps Helps SCSD Students Improve Reading, Writing Skills: “Don’t be shy… just sound it out!”   Elizabeth Salter is a freshman English major at Syracuse University.
