In case you missed it, the ITC chess team took third place among high schools in the recent ITC Invitational Chess Tournament! Congratulations to the team on this achievement. At this week’s monthly Board of Education meeting, we celebrated a handful of other student and staff achievements – click here to see photos and learn more!
Also this week, students at McKinley-Brighton were featured on the NewsChannel 9 ‘Victory Over Violence’ segment. Thanks to community member Anthony Jackson, students there have enjoyed a mentor program through which they have been encouraged to be leaders and make smart choices. I encourage you to take a moment to watch this story. In the coming weeks, two more McKinley-Brighton anti-violence programs will be highlighted on this new series, and I look forward to sharing those with you as they air.
This morning, P-TECH students at ITC took part in a Bed Build event where they built bunk beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a group dedicated to delivering beds to Syracuse families in need. The students rotated through stations where they measured, cut, sanded, stained and assembled beds, with the help of P-PTECH business partner. I am proud of the ways #SCSDGivesBack! We also give thanks for the generosity of the community. This week, Terakeet and their generous community partners donated more than $15,000 worth of supplies to more than 30 of our schools, and we are grateful for their support.
I want to take a moment to commend our schools that are working hard at achieving our Strategic Plan priorities. At Bellevue, students, staff and families recently enjoyed a ‘family field trip’ to Wonder Works, where they had some science fun and were even able to sleep over as part of a community engagement event. It’s great to see so many engaged families serving as partners in our students’ #SCSDSuccess!
If you haven’t already, please take a moment to thank a Vice Principal this week – National Assistant Principals Week. Our VPs do so much to support our students, staff and families, and we appreciate their dedication.
Finally, this week’s #SCSDLookBack video features Huntington students volunteering to help end child hunger around the world, ITC students participating in a Community Wide Dialogue to end racism, Syracuse Latin students learning about recycling and writing their own books, Westside Academy students visiting the zoo, Bellevue students making sandwiches for the Oxford Inn, Van Duyn students celebrating good behavior with popcorn and more.
