As we wrap up this last week of school for the 2018-19 school year, I want to start by saying thank you to all 4,000 SCSD employees for your hard work this year. While we still have room for improvement, we have made strides toward improving our district for our students and families, and each of you has played an important role. It was wonderful to see so many celebrations in our school buildings this week, wishing our students well as they set off for summer vacation. Porter fifth graders enjoyed an enthusiastic cheer from staff as they left their elementary school for the first time; Clary staff all waved farewell as students left for the summer; and Webster students watched school staff smile and wave as their buses pulled away. Thank you to all of you who made the last week of school extra special for our young scholars.
On Wednesday, I was pleased to say ‘thank you’ to our Board of Education Commissioners during NYSSBA’s School Board Appreciation Week. We appreciate the support of the Board in guiding our district and our students to success. We also appreciate the dedication of our Unit 1 staff, teaching assistants, building leaders and department leaders – they started their summer vacations by taking part in professional development this week. There were 35 separate PD offerings at 19 locations, and I appreciate Darcy Woodcock’s leadership in planning these sessions, as well as the active participation of all who were involved!
In case you haven’t heard, I am proud to share that Syracuse Latin has been named a Recognition School by the New York State Department of Education. Recognition Schools have high academic achievement, student growth and graduation rates and have made progress from year-to-year – click here to learn more about them. Syracuse Latin is being recognized because of the hard work of staff and students, and they are well deserving of this honor!
This week’s #SCSDLookBack video features even more end-of-the-year festivities, including a kindergarten moving up ceremony at Seymour, Van Duyn and Dr. Weeks students visiting Orenda Springs, Porter students visiting Burnet Park, WSA 8th graders enjoying a semi-formal dance, Syracuse Latin students visiting The Wild Animal Park, LeMoyne students who were celebrated for perfect attendance all year, Dr. King students planting vegetables in their school garden and so much more. Thank you for sharing your good news throughout the year – be sure to keep that good news coming during the summer by tagging @SyracuseSchools on Twitter and using #SCSDSummerLearning or #SCSDSuccess.
Finally, please consider joining us at commencement this weekend to show support for the Class of 2019! Click here for details about the graduation ceremonies that will take place on Saturday and Sunday at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College. We are so proud of our newest graduates!
