SCSD Seniors Named Section III Scholar Athletes

Each year, Section III Athletics honors top senior athletes who excelled both in the classroom and on the playing field. These athletes must play multiple sports and have at least a 90 average. Congratulations to our 2022 Scholar Athletes: from Corcoran, Chadani Timsina and Cole Retzel; from Nottingham, Thomas Carson and Madeline Scott; from ITC, Albatool Al Jiboury and Dondre Baker; from PSLA at Fowler, Adnawmy Serrano-Calderon and Anthony Southammavong; and from Henninger, Nicole Kunzmann and Laine Wojcik! These students each received a plaque, a commemorative program, and a $100 scholarship.

Corcoran

 
Cole Reitzel is a long-standing member of the XC Country program at Corcoran, where he was also the XC Team Captain as well as a member the Syracuse Bowling and Tennis Teams. He also participated in men’s lacrosse at the JV level for two seasons. He is a member of the Honor Society, an IB diploma candidate, Regents Diploma with a math designation, and a Leadership Scholar at ECS Syracuse University. Cole was a member of All City Band in his 9th and 10th grade years, Boys Scouts of America Order of the Arrow, a volunteer with CNY Land Trust, and a volunteer at Our Lady of Hope Church. He has attended the Lockheed Martin Engineering Program for teens… and has done all of this while maintaining a weighted GPA of 97.42! Cole plans to attend Syracuse University this fall studying engineering, with a minor in architecture.
 
Chadani Timsina is a hardworking student athlete who focuses on soccer and academics full time.  Her coach characterizes her as a 100% student athlete exemplar and a leader without question. She has served as a team captain, a member of the National Honor Society, National Honor Art Society, is an IB Candidate, has achieved High Honor Roll all 4 years of HS, is a member of Seeds of Peace, Big Brother Big Sister and the schools Climate and Culture Committee. Chadani volunteers at the Syracuse Youth Advisory Council, and is also a volunteer at Girl Ambassadors for Human Rights. She received a paid Internship through Bank of America, works at Kinney Drugs, was awarded Big Sister of the year and is an Upstate NY Affiliate winner in a NCWIT for Aspirations Computing Competition. She achieved all of this while maintaining a weighted average of 102.217 – which also ranks her first in her class as Valedictorian! Chadani will attend Dartmouth College this fall studying pre-med in the pursuit of becoming a medical doctor.
 

Henninger

 
Nicole Kunzmann has maintained an unweighted average of 99.04 over the past 4 years while participating in 4 years of Softball, 3 of Swimming, and a year of volleyball. She has earned All-American Scholar Athlete designation in Swimming where she was team captain. She was awarded the Patrick Spadafora Award as a Junior for her citizenship and scholastics. She has earned the Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish. Nicole stays busy being part of the Knights in Action and Balancing the Books, while working the Little League concession stand and organizing food drives for her community. Nicole is a Lifeguard for Parks and Recreation and also lifeguards for the Syracuse City Boys swim team. She will attend the St. Joseph College of Nursing at Le Moyne College.
 
Laine Wojcik has maintained an unweighted average of 98.8, which ranks her number 7 in her graduating class. She has participated on Varsity Volleyball and Crew for 4 years. She captained the volleyball team for 2 years and was the Coxswain for 3 in Crew. She is a member of the Honor Society, Senior class Secretary, and is a member of the Student Council. Laine has earned the Seal of Biliteracy and holds the office of Secretary for the Book Club.  She does all this while working at Wegman’s and at Syracuse University Web and Tech Services. She will be attending the University of Buffalo in the fall.
 

ITC

 
Albatool Al Jiboury ranks 10th out of 155 in her graduating class. She is a 3-year member of the Volleyball team, where she has also served as Captain. She participates in Book Club, the school’s Multicultural Fair, CHOICES, the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet, the Syracuse Youth Advisory group, and Student Government. She has also achieved High Honor Roll throughout her high school career. Albatool volunteers with the Salvation Army for the Christmas Toy Drive, and is also the Senior Class President! She will attend Syracuse University, where she plans to study History and Pre-Law.
 
Dondre Baker ranks 29th out of the 155 in his graduating class. He participated in Football and Basketball all 4 years of high school, where he played in the Football All-Star Game and was named to the Football 1st Team All-League. He has achieved honor roll all four years of high school and currently designs his own clothing line, called ‘Call-Time.’ He volunteers for the Salvation Army Christmas Toy Drive. Dondre plans to attend Buffalo State to study Graphic Design and would like to expand his freelance and clothing design business.

Nottingham

 
Thomas Carson participated in Swimming, Soccer, Baseball, and Tennis. He ranks 6th in his graduating class, with a weighted GPA of 102.7. Thomas works as a Syracuse City lifeguard and is a Soccer Referee for the New York State West Youth Soccer Association. He has also participated as a Key Club Secretary, serves on the School Climate Team, member of National Honor Society, participates in Community Wide Dialogue, Nottingham Math Team, Syracuse All-City Band, Nottingham Advanced Band, Nottingham Pep Band, and All-City Jazz Band. Thomas has also held various leadership roles, including: Volunteer Captain for Schoolboard Election, Varsity Soccer Captain, Varsity Swimming Captain, Key Club Secretary, Community Wide Dialogue Facilitator, Student Government Representative, Varsity Esports Captain, and Advanced Band Section Leader.
 
Madeline Scott has participated in Cross Country, Crew, and Track. She ranks third in her graduating class, with a weighted GPA of 102.711. Madeline plans to attend Syracuse University where she will study Mechanical Engineering. She was named “most improved runner” in 9th grade; XC City School Champ in 10th grade; and Team XC Captain in 12th grade. She participated in National Honor Society, and in Grade 11 was a Yale Book Award Recipient. In addition, Madeline served as Secretary of the RPG Table Top Club, Head of Construction/Head of Stage Crew for Nottingham Performing Arts, and Co-Vice President of Ceremonies for National Honor Society at Nottingham. She volunteers at St. Stephens Lutheran Church and works as a Syracuse City Lifeguard.
 

PSLA

 
Adnawmy (Nicole) Serrano-Calderon ranks 14th out of 321 in her graduating class. She has played Volleyball for all four years of high school. She has also earned the Seal of Biliteracy, has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years, served on the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet and has volunteered for various community service projects through her church. Adnawmy is part of the PSLA at Fowler Cosmetology program and has gone to elementary and middle schools to do students’ hair. She plans to attend Syracuse University where she will study business.
 
Anthony Southammavong ranks 19th out of 321 in his graduating class. He participated in Football, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track all 4 years of high school. He received Honorable Mention in Football and was named Captain of the Football team in 11th and 12th grades. He also participated in the All-Star Football game. Anthony received the My Brother’s Keeper Fellowship award, and also participated in the Drama Club, Building Men, and weightlifting competitions. He has organized a men’s mental health event for the community and plans to intern with the Syracuse Police Department this summer! Anthony will be attending OCC to study Health and Exercise Science.
