The Juvenile Urban Multicultural Program (JUMP Nation) at Syracuse University hosted a competition called “Are You Smarter Than an 8th Grader?” in which local middle school students partnered with college students answering a series of 11 questions.  Roberts 8th grader, Ivori Acevedo and her college partner Nia were the winners!
JUMP Nation was founded in 1991 at Binghamton University when a group of students saw a need to address and implement a program to aid “at-risk” students in underprivileged communities. Each semester in Syracuse, the local JUMP Nation chapter selects a group of eighth grade students from various junior high schools to participate in their bi-annual "JUMPStart to College Leadership Summit" on the Syracuse University Campus. This is day-long event where the proteges or middle school students are brought to campus for a day full of forums and interactive workshops.  Each protégé is paired with a mentor to form a network of support and encouragement that will help them overcome obstacles throughout their high school careers, while simultaneously introducing them to an environment of higher education.
“Are You Smarter Than an 8th Grader?” was borne out of this same mission and was created to replicate the popular FOX TV.  SU students were partnered with a middle school student and were challenged to answer a series of 11 questions ranging from the 6-8th grade academic level. The team with the most points at the end won and was declared the winner.
