SCSD Students Spring into Summer with Free Books

The Syracuse City School District has started its “Spring into Summer” book distribution!
Research has shown that a ‘summer slide’ can occur in the summer months, in which students experience a loss of reading skills and an overall decline in academic progress. The best predictor of whether or not a child reads over the summer is access to books, so to reverse this trend, the SCSD will once again provide age and grade level-appropriate books for every kindergarten through fifth grade student in the district.
Superintendent Contreras led a kickoff event at Van Duyn Elementary, along with representatives from the American Reading Company, and remaining schools in the district will follow suit. Through this program, students will go home with a bag full of books of their choosing, to help them continue building good summer reading habits when school is not in session.
