The Titanic Award  The Most Beautiful Boat Award

The 5th graders at Van Duyn Elementary entered the Syracuse City School District's "Sink or Swim Competition" where students built cardboard boats in a week! On April 21st, twenty-five 5th grade CHAMPS attended the competition, but all of the 5th graders worked together to build their boats. Students from Van Duyn won three awards. One team won Most Beautiful Boat, another team won Most Motivated and another team won The 'Titanic' Award given to the boat who had the most spectacular sinking. This was an amazing experience for all of our students. They were excited and in awe of their own persistence and team work, not to mention psyched to get into the 12 feet of water! This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to practice their engineering, mathematics and sportsmanship skills!
