In celebration of Navy Week, SCSD students at Danforth, HW Smith, Grant, Salem Hyde, Bellevue, PSLA at Fowler, Frazer and Corcoran enjoyed special festivities, intended to help them learn about the Navy and the many ways in which its members protect America.
From demonstrations in a Navy Diving Tank and by Navy Ordnance Disposal teams to Navy Band musical performances to Navy simulators and interactive displays and even a visit from a Real Admiral, students of all ages got a glimpse of the extensive opportunities the Navy offers.
At Grant Middle School, sixth graders were treated to a special presentation by members of the U.S. Navy's Sea, Air and Land Teams, better known as the Navy SEALs. The SEALs explained why they joined the Navy, showed videos of their training, described their jobs and the education needed to perform them and answered questions from the inquisitive students.
PSLA at Fowler students in Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, Emergency Medical Technician and Cybersecurity programs got to speak with Navy sailors and officials, and the PSLA NJROTC program especially appreciated the special Navy Week experience.
“We had so much fun,” NJROTC student Esther Leyla, a sophomore, insisted. “We learned how divers work underwater and how they disassemble bombs… we met a Real Admiral and learned about her role in the Navy… and we saw the Navy Band perform—they got us pumping!”
“It was fun to bring everyone together for Navy Week,” classmate Janel Perez added. “And it was nice to see all the opportunities offered in the Navy and how NJROTC will help us.”
Thank you to the U.S. Navy for selecting Syracuse as one of the 15 cities to host Navy Week this year and to all who took part!
