Superintendent's Message to Staff - November 10

What a quick week this has been, yet full of excitement! In honor of Election Day, students across the district took part in voting – for candidates, their favorite snack food and more. At Bellevue, students even learned about fact versus opinion and recorded their own speeches in support of Presidential nominees! I am always glad to see our students becoming #SCSDCivicReady, and election season is a great chance for that to happen.

While students enjoyed a day off for the election, staff took part in a Superintendent’s Conference Day, engaging in Professional Development sessions where they took part in personalized learning simulations, learned about bias and diversity, cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and more. Teams from Grant and Dr. Weeks even visited Albany last weekend to present at the first State Education Department ‘What Works’ Conference! I appreciate all of you who took the time to expand your knowledge and become even stronger educators.

As we prepare to celebrate Veteran’s Day tomorrow, please take a moment to thank a veteran for his or her service. Roberts students hosted a great event this morning, “Breakfast for Veterans,” where they sang to veterans, gave each of them a thank you letter and spoke with them about their service to the nation. Keep an eye out on social media for photos from the event on our Facebook page– and thank you to the students who took part!

Of course, we couldn’t wrap up a week without taking the time to reflect on all the positive things that have been happening in our buildings! Our latest #SCSDLookBack video features the Empathy Matters program at HW Smith, P-Tech students playing engineering BINGO at SRC and volunteering at the Girls World Expo, the Dr. Weeks Extended Learning Time team speaking in Albany, Henninger’s performance of Alice in Wonderland, Huntington students learning about Colonial America, PSLA EMT & Fire Rescue students touring Morrisville State, SU athletes speaking to Roberts students about anti-bullying and more. Share your good news photos with us on Twitter (@SyracuseSchools) to be featured in next week’s SCSD Look Back!

Enjoy your holiday weekend.
