Superintendent's Message to Staff - December 23
Published on 1/3/17
The holiday spirit was at work this week throughout the SCSD, and we have so much good news to share! This week, members of the Superintendent’s Student Cabinet read to elementary students and distributed more than 1,300 candy canes! Corcoran students visited Bellevue, Nottingham students visited Dr. King, Henninger students visited Dr. Weeks, PSLA at Fowler students visited Seymour and ITC students visited Syracuse Latin.
Reading was also encouraged at other elementary schools, thanks to a generous student from Fayetteville-Manlius who donated more than 1,400 books for Dr. Weeks students! The Compassion Coalition donated 900 games, too, so every student at Dr. Weeks received both a book and a game this week. At Frazer, NYSUT arranged a donation of 2,000 books, giving each student the opportunity to choose his or her own book to take home. It is so important that we engrain in students a love for reading at a young age, and these efforts are a great way to help them get excited about reading!
Central Office staff in the Human Resources and Accounting departments will be taking a hands-on approach in a new Reading Buddies program with Roberts third graders. Early in the New Year, staff will visit will Roberts students each week to help them practice their reading. This week, staff invited students to the Central Office for a kickoff party with festive snacks and social time.
Meanwhile, holiday concerts are in full swing. Don’t miss these great videos: McKinley-Brighton students performed ‘Jingle Bells’ with some fantastic costumes, and Delaware students showed off their dual language skills!
Please be reminded that the 21st Annual CNY Bike Giveaway will take place this Saturday, 12/24 at Fowler High School from 9 am – noon. Bikes will be available for children, teens and adults and I hope you will spread the word to families that may benefit from this great event.
Finally, don’t forget to watch this week’s #SCSDLookBack video! It features Westside Academy students making ‘Future Self’ videos, Seymour students receiving books from Bishop Grimes and presents from Santa, spirit week at Dr. King, Family Movie Night at Dr. Weeks, a Holiday Bazaar at Frazer, a Holidays around the World celebration at Salem Hyde, Franklin students heading to the County Spelling Bee, ITC students making dog toys for Helping Hounds of CNY and more. Share your good news photos with us on Twitter (@SyracuseSchools) to be featured next week!
Enjoy a relaxing and blessed holiday with your families and friends – I look forward to seeing you again, refreshed and rejuvenated, after the New Year!
