High School Graduation Dates

The dates and times for the 2011-12 graduation ceremonies are available below. In addition to the five traditional high school graduation ceremonies taking place there will also be an adult education graduation ceremony, a ceremony for the graduates of the LPN program and the August summer graduation. The ceremony schedule is:

Say Yes Four Year Progress Report

Since 2008, Say Yes has been working alongside Syracuse City School District, Syracuse Teachers Association, the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College, many community-based organizations, and local businesses to ensure that every student in the District has the ability to reach his or her academic potential. From providing comprehensive supports that begin the day a child enters Kindergarten to offering every eligible high school graduate the chance to attend a Say Yes partner college tuition free. Say Yes together with the SCSD are working together to turn things around in our city. Break Fast For Success

The Syracuse City School District has been awarded a grant from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) designed to increase the number of already eligible children who actually receive breakfast at school. Syracuse is one of four school districts from across the United States chosen to participate in the program.

Teens Mingle with Award-Winning Authors at Rochester Book Festival

Students from three Syracuse City School District high schools spent a recent Saturday mingling with some of the best young adult authors in the business at the 2012 Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival.

Contingency Weather Days Unused-Schools Closed May 24th and 25th

As a result of the unused inclement weather days this year, school will not be in session on Thursday, May 24, 2012 or Friday, May 25, 2012.

There will be no school for students on May 24th and 25th.

Free Seminar for SCSD Parents

The Syracuse City School District is hosting a free parent seminar on The Nurtured Approach- Helping Children Flourish Emotionally, Academically, & Socially. The seminar will take place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 6:30-8:00 PM at the Expeditionary Learning Middle School (4942 S. Salina St.).

Nottingham and Fowler VeX Robotics Teams Compete at VeX Robotics World Championships
04/19/12

The Fowler and Nottingham VeX Robotics Teams are competing in the VeX Robotics World Championships in Anaheim, California. Nottingham team advisor Bryan English has created a Twitter account so friends and family can follow the teams progress throughout the four days of competition.

You can follow the team's account here. There is a page set up that Mr. English will be updating every day for the remainder of the competition.

Science Fair Winners

More than 500 Syracuse City School District students School District took part in the 2012 Science and Career Fair and Environmental Challenge at the Carrier Dome on the Syracuse University campus.

A joint project between the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry Outreach and the District, the Challenge encourages student research and the exploration of science and science -related careers.

Superintendent Recognizes District Volunteers at Luncheon

Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras recently honored over 300 school volunteers from the Syracuse community at a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. The honorees were recognized for their continued support of the school district through their volunteerism. The volunteers graciously give of their time and talents for the betterment of the students in the Syracuse City School District.

Strategic Planning Process Public Forum

The Syracuse City School District is committed to dramatically improving student educational outcomes and has launched a Strategic Planning process. The planning process which will conclude in May will outline actions for dramatic district improvement, including specific school- and district-level goals. The strategic plan will address: human capital strategies, improved teaching and learning strategies, improved curriculum and instruction strategies, teacher and leader evaluation and compensation processes, family and community engagement and communications plans.

The Strategic Plan will be a visionary document aligned to the district’s transformation agenda and includes input from the Core Planning Team. This team will be responsible for making recommendations to the Superintendent on the plan’s content. Members of the Core Planning Team represent a diverse range of stakeholders, including parents, representatives from higher education, teacher and administrator unions, the district central office, community-based organizations, and the ministerial and business communities. The team will meet six times from March through May to determine a vision and goals for the district, develop strategies to meet the goals, and craft an accountability plan to monitor implementation over a five-year time period. The School Turnaround Group (STG) at Mass Insight Education will facilitate the strategic planning process and draft language that reflects the input of all stakeholders.
