Education Programs ( CTE )

The mission of CTE is to empower all students through innovative partnerships that build technical, academic & professional leadership skills for college and career success.

The world is full of exciting job opportunities and SCSD connects you to them— with the fundamentals, training, certification and hands-on experience you need to excel in your chosen career path. Have you ever dreamed of owning your own salon or barber shop? Do you get “fired up” at the idea of owning a restaurant? How about playing a role in the fast-paced world of EMTs, Syracuse Police Officers or Syracuse Firefighters? Or maybe your dream is to be on-screen, hosting the evening news or ESPN? If you are interested in any of these exciting careers, the SCSD Career and Technical Education (CTE) program has exactly what you are looking for. Currently, the Syracuse City School District Offers CTE programs in all 5 high schools. As a SCSD student, you can opt to attend the school that will give you the best CTE experience. Students will also have the opportunity to obtain required, relevant industry-recognized certification. In addition, local professionals will provide you with hands-on instruction and experiences, while internships and mentorship programs will give you the opportunity to earn college credits! Pathways in Technology Early College High School Programs

The Syracuse City School District offers P-TECH programs in several high-demand industries. The programs are offered at Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central (ITC), Henninger High School and Public Service Leadership Academy (PSLA) at Fowler High School. P-TECH is a program that creates indivudal pathways for students to simultaneously obtain their high school diploma, earn an associate’s degree, and obtain workplace learning experience. The program is designed to motivate and enable students to earn a college degree and successfully transition into the workplace, with the preparation and skills needed by employers.

Automotive Technology

It takes more than the turn of a key to make a car run. Working on today’s cars requires an understanding of the science and technology utilized in the design of modern automobiles. In the Automotive Technology program at ITC, students spend time in the classroom and then apply what they’ve learned on real cars in our state-of-the art facilities.
Training includes diagnosis and repair of all automotive systems using modern tools and diagnostic equipment, with an emphasis on:
  • Engine management systems
  • Driveability
  • Drivetrain systems
  • Chassis
  • Maintenance

Barbering

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students can work and learn in our barbershop while gaining hands-on experiences in this exciting field. Students learn how to deal with clients, maintain a professional work environment and provide professional services to real customers. Students completing the program can apply for their temporary New York State license.

 

Business Technology

In this program at Corcoran, Henninger, Nottingham and PSLA at Fowler, students learn the skills necessary to pursue business or finance degrees in college. They learn the fundamentals of running a successful business and develop ready-to-work practices. Business Technology students will also have opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school, participate in work-based learning experiences and receive industry credentials.

 

Computer Forensics

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students will learn techniques to search for, preserve and analyze information on computer systems to find potential evidence for a trial. Courses will involve in-depth coverage of computer crime laws, collection and management of evidence, analyzing computers that might contain crime-related information and preparing computer evidence for courtroom testimony.

 

Construction Technology

In this program at Nottingham, students will learn the essential skills needed to begin a career in the building and construction trades. Students will gain real-world knowledge and hands-on experience in the fundamental components of carpentry, drywall, painting, framing, roofing, floor installation, blueprint reading, siding, electrical wiring, plumbing, proper tool use and OSHA safety training

 

Cosmetology

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students will be prepared for a career in the beauty enhancement field. This pathway offers students the unique opportunity to develop and practice their skills during clinic when students and staff are invited to make appointments for Cosmetology services. Classes follow the New York State approved curriculum required for taking the written and practical state licensing exams.

 

Culinary Arts

In this program at ITC, students learn both theory and practice through hands-on work experience. The Culinary Artscourses use the ProStart program, an industry-driven curriculum developed by the National Restaurant Association, offering industry-recognized certificates to students meeting high standards. Curriculum enriches and reinforces what students learn in the classroom and helps students develop and practice skills critical to their future success.

 

Cybersecurity

In this program at PSLA, students learn how to make online information more secure and protect users from the growing threat of cyber atacks. The program teaches the core concepts needed to understand, assess and protect information security systems, including networking, operating systems and systems administration

 

Electrical Trades

In this program at PSLA, students will learn to design lighting systems, install street lights and intercom systems, learn about the latest renewable energy concepts and more. This program provides the hands-on skill development and technical training you need to secure an entry-level (or higher) job in the electrical trades field.

 

Emergency Medical Technician

In this program at PSLA, students learn to function independently in a medical emergency and provide pre-hospital care at the scene or during transport. Upon completion of the program, students will know how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies; understand the basics for handling cardiac and respiratory arrest, heart attacks, seizures and diabetic emergencies; realize how to manage traumatic injuries; and have hands-on experience in conducting patient assessment, history and vital signs.

 

Fire Rescue

In this program at PSLA, students will learn about fire prevention and develop critical skills necessary to handle challenges and demands of fire-prevention and a variety of emergencies. Fire-Rescue Cadets are taught in academy style instruction. Students are exposed to the same curriculum that career and volunteer firefighters are taught.

 

Forensic Science

In this program at PSLA, students will learn to gather and examine evidence used in a court of law. Students will learn to collect and document physical evidence, conduct laboratory analysis and present results during testimony in a court of law. Forensic Investigation skills include crime scene investigation, DNA analysis and blood typing, fingerprinting and impression evidence, blood spatter and ballistics, death investigation, psychology and profiling, legal rules of evidence and more.

Geospatial Technology

In this program at PSLA, students will learn how to use and apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), remote sensing and data visualization tools. Students will learn key methodologies used by Geospatial specialists and participate in hands-on activities and lessons that use industry-standard software to create and analyze spatial analyses and display mapping data.

 

Health Professions

In this program at Henninger, students will be prepared to enter a variety of health careers. Students will be introduced to infection control, medical terminology, human growth and development, anatomy and physiology, structure and function of body systems, the study of diseases and the disease process, healthcare technology, medical ethics and jurisprudence, standards of professional conduct, patient communication and the fundamentals of patient care.

 

Law Enforcement

In this program at PSLA, students will learn to appropriately and professionally react to situations where the public might be at risk - by manmade or natural emergencies. Students will learn tactics, theory and skills required of today's law enforcement professionals, including cadet training, certified performance testing, physical training, training in DNA analysis, crime scene processing and security operations.

 

Media Communications

In this program at ITC, students will learn to work in a professional television studio while being involved in operating the school's news and communication network, including announcements, social media, news magazines and web presence. In this program, students will learn video and photo methods to professionally edit footage into finished videos; apply creative and professional framing techniques to photo shoots; and create photo shoot lists and storyboards and use digital storytelling principles.

 

Medical Assisting

In this program at Henninger, students will learn information and skills common to all medical assistants, including taking a patient's history, preparing an examination room and assisting a physician during an examination. This pathway is offered for any student interested in obtaining a Medical Assistant Certification upon graduation from high school

 

Natural Resources

In this program at Nottingham, students will develop an integrated view of the biological, ecological and social dimensions of the environment. Students enrolled in the pathway will acquire a variety of skills including: planning and design; conservation management and environmental health; bioprocess engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, land surveying and park maintenance; ecology and population studies; and wildlife and plant ID and conservation studies.

 

NJROTC

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students can participate in their education and learn to be better citizens. The program provides students with the tools and skills they need to succeed in high school; and, more importantly, help them be successful in life. NJROTC benefits include: development of leadership potential; promotion of community service; development of a high degree of personal honor; and self-reliance, individual discipline and leadership.

 

Urban Teacher Preparation Program

In this program at Corcoran, students will have the opportunity to prepare for a career in urban education and earn no-cost transferable college credits. Students in the program will learn about and practice the unique skills required to be a successful educator in a diverse urban environment. Urban Teacher Prep graduates will have a head start for the next phase of their career in urban education from two-year college programs to four-year college and graduate programs.

 

Welding

In this program at Corcoran, students will be prepared for extended study in apprenticeship, two-year college or employment. The skills taught are based on the Standards of the American Welding Society (AWS). Students will learn: basic and advanced practices of metal inert gas (MIG), stick and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding; plasma and torch cutting; metal art; safety (OSHA training); introduction to fabrication and repair; and aluminum and stainless steel TIG welding.

Clinical Laboratory Technician ( P-TECH )

In this program at Henninger, students will work in a medical laboratory environment where they will acquire an Associate's degree and the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for positions as entry-level laboratory technicians in a clinical laboratory. Students will gain practical experience through: scientific investigations and experiments; collection and testing of samples; and writing reports and presenting information in a state-of-the-art, high-tech laboratory setting.

 

Computer Information Systems  ( P-TECH )

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students will learn about information processing, networks, hardware, software applications and web publishing through hands-on activities. They will learn the basic skills necessary to pursue careers in networking, information technology support, programming and web technology.

 

Electrical Technology ( P-TECH )

In this program at ITC, students are matched with a professional career coach, take core academic classes and also college classes, and gain professional work experience, all during their high school years. This program is oriented for students to learn to construct, test, analyze, troubleshoot and repair systems and sub-systems reflective of modern technology using real world engineering tools and the technologies of today. Students will learn about fundamental concepts including: electronics, industrial control, instrumentation, communications, power distribution and electronic hardware.

 

Health Information Technology ( P-TECH )

In this program at Henninger, students will learn to use the most current information systems for collecting, analyzing, disseminating and maintaining health care and patient data. Students will learn to understand medical information through coursework in anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology.

 

Mechanical Technology ( P-TECH )

In this program at ITC, students are matched with a professional career coach, take core academic classes and also college classes, and gain professional work experience, all during their high school years. The program is oriented to prepare students for employment in industry as engineering technicians. Coursework includes: engineering documentation, manufacturing processes, machining and inspection techniques, material science and computer-aided design (CAD).

 

Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems ( P-TECH )

In this program at PSLA at Fowler, students will be prepared to enter the fast-growing field of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. Students will participate in hands-on learning in developing the basic skills necessary for piloting, engineering and repairing Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems.
