Ed Smith families have had a monthly opportunity to come together – virtually – for a coffee with Principal Sam Barber this year. Hosted by the Office of Family Engagement and the Ed Smith PTO, at the virtual events, families are given the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and have an open discussion with the Principal and each other.

“Robust family engagement is a hallmark of the school culture at Ed Smith, and this event is one way to maintain the school’s strong sense of community, even though families cannot gather in person,” Office of Family Engagement Program Aide Emily Hart-Gorman explained.

Twenty families participated in the first “Coffee with the Principal” in November, discussing everything from COVID testing procedures and remote learning challenges to STAR testing, parent/teacher communication, specials like band and orchestra and more. The topics were chosen by the parents ahead of time, and then time was given to any other questions or concerns parents had.

What a wonderful way to stay connected and informed during these challenging times!
