Twenty-five 7th and 8th grade boys from the Syracuse City School District are part of a pilot program this summer that provides educational experiences as well as character building.  Participants come from Clary, Ed Smith and Hughes schools, where they were involved in the Building Men program.
As part of the summer program, the students are exposed to mathematics and science instruction via the AVID Summer Bridge program, a young men’s book club, character building talks, a basketball skills and development camp and Friday field trips to Team Adventure, Syracuse University, Clarks Reservation and Orenda Springs.  The participants are housed at Lincoln Middle School during the program, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
The boys will each receive two books, “We Beat The Streets,’’ written by the Three Doctors and “Purpose Living Teen,’’ written by Coach Darrell Andrews, at the conclusion of camp. Basketball coaches from throughout the area will present at the afternoon basketball camps and guest speakers will appear for weekly Chalk Talks, interactive sessions designed to prompt discussion and encourage reflective writing.
The camp runs through Aug. 15.
