The 2013-14 school year is underway and by all accounts the opening was a tremendous success.  A great deal of time and energy went into preparing for the opening and we are grateful for everyone’s efforts.

There is a great deal of excitement surrounding this school year.  We are in year two of our new mathematics and English language arts curricula which are both closely aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards.  The social studies department has launched a pilot curriculum in preparation of the adoption of the new NYS social studies frameworks and modules which will also be aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards and the new National Standards in social studies known as the C3 (College, Career and Civic Life) Framework.  We are also continuing to increase our CTE and STEM offerings.

We have invested in technology for both students and teachers.  There are 235 new whiteboards in place with 175 more scheduled to be in classrooms this fall.  We have new Project Lead the Way and distance learning labs.  In addition to technology improvements we have also invested in new text books with over 21,000 new books being purchased the 2013-14 school year.
Our iZone initiative is fully underway at Bellevue ES, Danforth MS, Frazer K-8, Porter ES, Seymour ES, Van Duyn ES and Westside Academy at Blodgett MS.  The enthusiasm at these openings was palpable as over 270 volunteers and community members welcomed our students to the first day of school in the iZone.

Best of luck to our students, parents, teachers administrators as we continue on our quest to become the most improved urban school district in the nation.
