Superintendent's Message to Staff - June 16
Published on 6/19/17
Before our seniors began their Regents exams this week, they took time on Monday to participate in walk-throughs at elementary, middle and Pre-K-8 schools. This is one of my favorite events of the year, as our youngest students get to see what hard work will help them achieve and our graduating seniors see some added support at this special time of celebration! Don’t miss these great photos and videos of Fowler, Henninger, Corcoran and ITC graduates as they marched through schools. HW Smith even welcomed this year’s Nottingham Class of 2017 with a schoolwide assembly – don’t miss the video here!
I had the unique experience this week of visiting our Ropes Course at Clary/ELMS. There, I was able to experience first-hand why our students love this team-building and confidence-building activity so much! The ropes course is open to SCSD students and staff and I encourage you to reach out to Chris Hodge or Fred Wheeler if you’re interested in setting up a visit.
On Wednesday, several of our schools celebrated Flag Day. Webster had a festive celebration complete with parade and remarks from students, and Frazer celebrated with the assistance of the PSLA NJROTC Color Guard.
This week, our ELMS eighth graders hosted their year-end exhibition, where students honored veterans at their annual ‘Through the Eyes of Our Veterans’ event at the War Memorial. Over the course of the school year, these students interviewed veterans from various conflicts. They worked in groups to write the veterans’ stories in a way that would honor the sacrifice that each of them has made, and at the event, they performed the narratives that they wrote.
Our Dr. King students gave back to the community as well as they celebrated their “Community Give Back Day” on Wednesday. A group of students volunteered at Meals on Wheels, fifth graders read to Pre-K students, kindergarten raised money for the Golisano Children’s Hospital and more.
On Thursday evening, our Adult Education students participated in their graduation ceremony at PSLA at Fowler. I always appreciate the opportunity to celebrate these graduates and hear their stories of what drove them to this milestone achievement. I am looking forward to celebrating the rest of our SCSD graduates next weekend at the SRC Arena!
Finally, this week’s #SCSDLookBack video features enrichment activities at Dr. Weeks, Seymour students visiting PSLA, a Bellevue staff brunch at Belhurst Castle, a Corcoran ‘Instant Theatre’ performance, a Daddy/Daughter dance at Dr. King, a Huntington fundraiser for pediatric cancer, a Scholar Athlete Dinner, field days at Syracuse Latin, Roberts students visiting Alexandria Bay and more. I hope you’ll take a minute to watch.
Next week is our final week of the 2016-17 school year, and I will have a special video to share in honor of our Class of 2017. In the meantime, stay focused and enjoy the last days of the year. You and your students have worked hard this year – let’s finish strong!
