As part of the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge, SCSD students were tasked with reading as much as they could this summer. Their minutes spent reading were tallied, and Mayor Miner visited classrooms with the most minutes read at each school building to present students with a bookmark, sunglasses and a cake.
“I like reading big chapter books,” LeMoyne summer school student Debora Yangwa, now a 6th grader at Grant Middle School, said. “Reading helps my fluency and it’s so fun! Books can make you feel happy, sad, mad… they’re like friends!”
Congratulations to Ms. Stroman’s 4th and 5th grade class at Huntington for reading 18,610 minutes; Ms. Simpson’s 4th and 5th grade class at Webster for reading 14,952 minutes; Ms. Paddock’s 4th and 5th grade class at McKinley-Brighton for reading 14,760 minutes; Mr. Shanahan’s 3rd and 4th grade classes at Hughes/Syracuse Latin for reading 8,030 minutes; Mr. Lamon’s 4th and 5th grade class at Meachem for reading 8,019 minutes; Ms. Wentworth’s kindergarten class at Franklin for reading 7,875 minutes; Mrs. Ebner’s 4th and 5th grade class at Frazer for reading 7,140 minutes; Ms. Hurley and Ms. Horton’s 2nd grade class at Salem Hyde for reading 5,572 minutes; Mr. Grover’s 4th and 5th grade class at LeMoyne Elementary for reading more than 5,000 minutes; Mr. Strack’s 3rd grade class at Dr. King for reading 4,300 minutes; Ms. Coggins’ 4th and 5th grade class at Delaware Academy for reading more than 4,000 minutes; Ms. Randall and Ms. Vergara’s kindergarten and first grade dual-language class at Delaware Primary for reading more than 4,000 minutes; Mrs. Bacon’s 4th and 5th grade class at Van Duyn; Mr. Marzullo’s class at HW Smith; Ms. Blood’s 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Dr. Weeks; and Ms. Doty’s 1st grade class at Roberts.
