Superintendent's Message 5/31/19

This week, we recognized our retirees and years of service honorees at a reception celebrating their ongoing contributions to the Syracuse City School District. Don’t miss these great photos from the event! I appreciate that we have so many dedicated staff in the SCSD, and this week we celebrated those who have committed more than 25 years to our district… wow!

On Thursday, we hosted the second annual SCSD Special Olympics at Corcoran. Students took part in events including a softball throw, shotput, broad jump, long jump and more. In the SCSD, we celebrate our diversity, and this was a wonderful way to celebrate all of our students and their individual talents. It was especially wonderful to see our Syracuse Latin scholars cheering on their classmates as they headed out to compete!

Also on Thursday, thanks to a partnership with The Good Life Youth Organization, our Clary students partnered with Danforth and Corcoran students to host a Peace Rally. The rally was prompted by student restorative circle discussions that centered around violence in the community, and the students wanted to find ways to share their ideas on how to stop it. They wrote letters about their ideas to Mayor Walsh, who attended the event, and I am so proud of these students for being #SCSDCivicReady.

If you see Commissioner Body, be sure to congratulate her on being named the Onondaga Madison School Boards Association Board Member of Achievement Honoree at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Central New York School Boards Association this week!

On a sad note, BOVA driver messenger Tony Bush suffered a personal tragedy recently as his family lost everything in a house fire.  If you would like to donate, we are collecting cash or gift card donations (Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, or Target) which can be given to Don Carr at BOVA, Dan Muehl at the School Service Center or Heather TenEyck in CFO Slack’s office. They will be collected over the coming weeks and provided to the family.  I hope you will consider donating in support of one of our colleagues.

Finally, this week’s #SCSDLookBack video features Syracuse Latin students visiting Beaver Lake Nature Center, ELMS students enjoying a class overnight, Grant students enjoying a trip to Washington DC, a career fair at Clary, Danforth students becoming leaders at Orenda Springs, WSA students touring Ithaca College and visiting Niagara Falls, Huntington students visiting NYC, Roberts students enjoying a Farmer’s Market and much more. As the year wraps up, keep sharing your good news with us on Twitter by tagging @SyracuseSchools and using #SCSDSuccess.

Sincerely,
Jaime
