Kindergarten

Dear Families,
 
This year your child will complete one milestone in his or her life, the first day of kindergarten.  We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year and helping them achieve their full potential. Our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  We are so excited that your child will be a part of our school family this year!

We believe that a good family-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year, we will communicate with you through agendas, telephone calls, report cards and parent teacher conferences.  We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns at any time.

Kindergarten Supply List

  • 2 boxes of #2 pencils, sharpened
  • 2 packages of pencil eraser caps
  • 10 glue sticks
  • 3 boxes of tissues
  • 1 standard size backpack - labeled with your child's name on it
  • 1 complete change of clothing (to be left at school in case of an accident)
  • 1 hoodie, sweater or sweatshirt and sneakers for gym   

First Grade

Dear families,
 
We would like to take a moment to welcome to express how proud we are of our new first graders.  As STEAM at Dr. King, our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  We hope that this letter will help you to know what to expect in 1st grade, and will answer some questions you may have.  Please read the information below.

Parent/Teacher Relationship
A good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success.  Throughout the year teachers will communicate with you through phone calls, notes, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences.  If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please call the school and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

School Attendance
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success.  We can’t emphasize this point enough!  Reading and Math foundations are defined this year, please see to it that your child attends every day except in cases of illness or emergency.  We will gladly provide work packets when your child is sick, to ensure that he/she does not fall behind.

Homework
Your child will have homework beginning the first full week of school.  Please check your child’s homework folder each night, as the homework due the following day will be inside.

First Grade Supply List

  • Back pack to bring home important notices and papers – please check your child’s bag every day and label with your child’s name
  • Two boxes of tissues to share with the class
  • Four boxes #2 Pencils
  • 4 large glue sticks (no bottles of glue, please)
  • 1 box of Crayola markers
  • 2 boxes of 24 Crayola crayons
  • 1 bottle of hand sanitizer
  • 2 pocket folder for homework

Second Grade

Dear Parents/Guardians,
 
Welcome to second grade for the 2019-2020 school year!  We hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. At STEAM at Dr. King, our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  We look forward to sharing this exciting year with your child. 

Please check your child’s book bag each night and be sure to take out important notices that are intended for you.

It is expected that homework packets be completed each night and returned on Friday. Homework is important as it reinforces concepts that are being taught during the day. 

Please be sure to keep your contact information up to date throughout the year, to ensure accessibility in the event of an emergency.

Second Grade Supply List

  • two boxes of tissues
  • 4 packs of #2 pencils

  • a 4 pack of EXPO markers
  • a package of glue sticks
  • a sock to use as an eraser
  • a backpack labeled with your child’s name
  • Please, NO hand held pencil sharpeners, classrooms are equipped with these!

Third Grade

Dear 3rd grade parent/guardian,

Welcome to third grade!  We hope you are enjoy your summer and that you will reading many good books!  Your teachers are looking forward to getting to know you.  As STEAM at Dr. King, our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  Next year, you will be learning a lot of new and exciting things, including countries, hands-on science activities, and multiplication.  In addition, next year you will be taking the NYS math and ELA exams. 

To make a smooth transition into third grade, practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping and telling time.  You should be able to read 77 words per minute.  Please make sure you are practicing your reading with a parent or older sibling.

We look forward to meeting you in September.  Below you will find a list of school supplies that are essential for your success in third grade. Please have these materials ready for September! 

Third Grade Supply List 

24 #2 pencils
2 boxes of tissues
2 packages of loose-leaf paper wide-ruled
3 composition notebooks
4 glue sticks
1 box of crayons (24 color)
4 pocket folders (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, 1 yellow)
4 highlighters
1 pkg of eraser tops
3 erasers
1 bookbag labeled with child’s name

Fourth Grade

Dear Future 4th Grade Student/Parent/Guardian:
 
Welcome to 4th grade!  We are very excited to have you on our team.  At STEAM at Dr. King, our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  To help ensure success for the up and coming year, we are encouraging your child to work on the following:
 
  • math facts to 12 (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • reading fluency (should be able to read 90 words a minute)
  • journal writing
 
In addition, you will need the following supplies by Thursday, September 5. Please do not send in plastic pencil boxes, they are too large for the desks.  Also, please do not send scissors or pencil sharpeners.

Fourth Grade Supply List 

  • 4 one subject notebooks
  • 4 pocket folders
  • 1 marble composition notebook
  • 1 pack of loose leaf paper
  • 10 #2 pencils with erasers
  • 1 box of tissues
  • 24 crayons/colored pencils
  • 1 1” binder
  • 1 pack of dividers
  • Bookbag labeled with student’s name

Fifth Grade

Dear Families,
 
Welcome to 5th grade!  We are so excited to be working with your child this year as 5th grade is a very important milestone in your child’s learning experience.  During the 2019-2020 school year, your child will be getting ready for the New York State ELA K – 12 assessment and Math assessment which will be given in the spring.  We will work hard to prepare your child for these tests by focusing on reading, writing, math, social studies and science.  Our goal will be to help each child become a successful learner. 
 
As STEAM at Dr. King, our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.  Your child will need the following school supplies for fifth grade. Please have these supplies by Monday, September 9, 2019. We will be working on creating a classroom that is built on trust, respect and community to achieve a productive learning environment.  We look forward to working with you.

Fifth Grade Supply List 

  • 4 plastic pocket folders: 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 blue, 1 green
  • 4 spiral notebooks: 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 blue, 1 green
  • 1 medium size hand sanitizer
  • 5 packages of #2 pencils
  • 2 boxes of tissues.  We will keep them in the closet and put out one box at a time
