Families at Meachem Elementary have been enjoying a special treat: the ability to virtually read with teachers in the school!
Each teacher recorded themselves reading a book for families to view, and videos were compiled online. This Literacy Engagement project was inspired by the school’s traditional in-person Literacy Night event.
“Literacy Night is such a beloved evening for our families and really helps set the tone for teacher and parents as partners in developing student literacy throughout the year,” Principal Katie Moulton explained. “We knew we couldn't do our typical in person make and take activities, so I thought there would be no better way to help connect staff and families at home than through a giant virtual read aloud!”
Principal Moulton brought the idea to the School Life Team, and teachers were overwhelmingly supportive and excited to share their favorite book with families.
Every staff member selected a book, using a virtual sign up sheet to vary the level of literature and make sure there was no overlap. Then, they recorded themselves reading their favorite story. Instructional coaches created how-to videos that were easy to follow so every staff member could participate.
“The student response has been amazing!” Principal Moulton added. “One of the best parts of the project is that it gives students the chance to connect with past teachers and non-teaching staff members… who they typically would get to interact with in the hallway or at lunch that they haven't had a chance to see this school year. Many students have shared how much they have loved ‘visiting’ their old first grade teacher or a favorite TA by watching their read-aloud! Parents have shared that they appreciate the project being something they can re-visit at their own pace without having to ‘tune in’ at a specific time. It shares the love of reading with everyone!”
