Roberts School sixth grader Mahella Soavelo has been declared the winner of the Syracuse Teacher Center’s ‘Bet You Didn’t Know Contest.’
Cosponsored by the Syracuse Teachers Center, New York Institute of Technology, Professor Garfield and The Encyclopedia of Life, the contest encouraged students to submit a 200 word essay on an interesting species, as well as a comic that illustrates the species’ unusual facts and features.
Roberts Librarian Silvia Macor said she thought the contest would be perfect for the 22 students in her ELA Tutorial Class, a group used to project-based tasks. But the contest was a challenge, she said, because the short word requirements forced students to be concise in what they wrote—in Mahella’s case, an essay and cartoon about the Yetti Crab.
“They didn’t think they would win because it’s a statewide contest,” Ms. Macor explained. “I said ‘you’ll never know if you don’t try!’ Everyone is very excited, even if they didn’t win. They are excited to see someone in their class and our community win, so we’re glad to celebrate.”
Great work, Mahella!
