Author and motivational speaker Manny Scott visited the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council (STAC) to speak with teachers about how to remain encouraged, inspire students and increase achievement in and out of the classroom.
Mr. Scott, an original Freedom Writer, now leads an educational consulting firm and travels the country telling his story and sharing the message that triumph in the midst of adversity is possible. Teachers comprising the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council raved over the presentation.
“I’m close to retirement, but he made me want to keep teaching!” Lincoln Special Education teacher Deborah Cook exclaimed.
“It was powerful… eye opening,” Van Duyn teacher Gwendolyn Fagan said of Mr. Scott’s presentation. “When we’re working with students, we really have to think about everything—our tone of voice, how we come across to our students. And we have to come in each day and be present. We may be the only constant that some of these students have.”
After Mr. Scott’s remarks, teachers reflected on the importance of relationships with students and their families, the importance of listening to students and their stories, and the influence they can have in helping to make great things happen within their classrooms. Thank you to Mr. Scott for inspiring such thoughtful discussions!
