A group of middle school girls from Danforth, Lincoln and Westside Academy at Blodgett recently attended the Expanding Your Horizons conference at Cornell University, intended to help encourage an interest in math and science.
Each year, 500 girls are selected from nationwide entries, and this year, all 75 SCSD students who were nominated for the conference lottery were selected to attend! At the conference, girls heard a keynote speech from a female scientist, attended workshops, learned about science books and resources and more.
“This year, our students registered for biology workshops because of their interest in the medical field and robotics workshops because they would like to pursue engineering,” WSA Teaching & Learning Coach Aditya Joseph Dhara said. “One student said she plans to come back next year because she could not go to all the workshops she wanted to this year! Hopefully, this spark of scientific curiosity will carry our students into STEM professions.”
Thank you to Cornell for hosting our students and to the chaperones from Westside, Danforth and Lincoln who made this event possible.
