We are excited to welcome our students & staff back to school for the 2018 - 19 school year!


As with any new beginning, a new school year comes with questions and unknowns. To serve as a resource for families, several Syracuse City School District departments and offices have compiled their most frequently asked questions - with answers - relating to the back-to-school season. Please see below for these questions, separated by department. If you have additional questions, please contact the relevant department directly at the phone number listed below.

How can my child get working papers?

Working papers can be acquired at your child’s school or at Central Office (725 
Harrison Street – Rooms 203A or 206). Please note:

- The student must be present to receive working papers
- The parent/guardian must complete and sign the Employment Certificate 
- application
- At the time of application, the student must provide a Physician’s Report of 
- Physical Exam issued within 12 months of the application date
- The student should be prepared to show Proof of Identification

How can I request a 504 plan for my child?


A 504 Plan spells out the modifications and accommodations that will be 
needed for a student to have an opportunity to perform at the same level as 
their peers. Examples could include an extra set of text books, home 
instructions or a tape recorder or keyboard for taking notes. If you would like 
to request a 504 Meeting for your child, please provide a written request, 
along with any supporting diagnosis documentation.

Once your request is received, a meeting will be set up at the child’s 
school at the earliest date possible.
Family Engagment


What do I do if my child is sick & needs to miss school?

If your child has a fever, diarrhea or is vomiting, he or she should stay at home. If your child needs to stay home from school, please call the school’s main office to notify them of the absence. Then, send a signed note explaining the reason for the absence when your child returns to school.
 

How do Iupdate my contact information?


To change your phone number, call your child’s school and ask the 
receptionist to update your number on file. To change your address, visit the 
school’s main office and request a change of address form. Be prepared to 
show proof of address, such as a lease or National Grid bill.

Transportation


What is the parent's responsibility for curb - to - curb bus stop?

The parent/guardian or an authorized individual over the age of 16 must accompany the student to and from the door of the bus. To authorize someone to escort your child, call your child’s school and provide the name to the main office staff. 

What time should students arrive at thier bus stop?


A student should arrive at the bus stop 10 minutes before their scheduled 
pickup time.  

If a bus is more than 10 minutes late, please call the 
Transportation Office at (315) 435-4260.

 
If your child is eligible for bus transportation, you will receive a mailing in 
late August with the bus stop location, pickup time and bus number. If you 
are eligible for transportation and do not receive the mailing, please contact 
the Transportation Office.

If one of my children has medical transportation, can his or her subling(s) also ride?


A sibling can only ride with a student who receives medical transportation if 
they meet the district policy of residing more than 1.5 miles from school.

Food & nutrition


Do my children need to bring lunch money?

No. The Syracuse City School District operates under a Community Eligibility Provision which provides a meal free of charge to all students. SCSD students receive a free breakfast, lunch and snack daily.

My child has a food allergy? Who do I call for notify the district?


Please provide a physician’s statement, which must indicate the allergy, how it restricts the child’s diet, the food (or foods) to be omitted from the child’s diet, and the food (or foods) that must be substituted. 

The statement can be: 

faxed to (315) 435-4879 or given to the school nurse at your child’s school. If you would like to speak with a nutrition expert to determine which menu items your child can (or cannot) consume, please call the Food & Nutrition Office at (315) 435-4207.

Do I need to fill out a household income eligability application even if we do not qualify?


Yes! The statistics for student qualifications are used by each school to 
qualify for further grants and funding. If you do not qualify, please fill in your 
child’s name, write ‘we do not qualify’ across the body of the application 
and sign the form. One form per family is sufficient – you do not need to 
complete a separate application for each child or for children enrolled in 
different SCSD schools.
